Report written by Daniel Mermelstein
Five goodgymers went on a mission to help the Barnet Mutual Aid group reduce food waste in north London.
It was not a very auspicious start: it was raining and Paul did not approve of my waterproof attire - who knew that GoodGym had a dress code! :-)
But as we cycled in the rain towards the Waitrose in Brent Cross, the weather and everyone's spirits brightened as we approached our destination, where we met the walkers of the group.
There we collected several rucksacks-worth of surplus food from a very welcoming and jolly team of Waitrose staff who couldn't quite believe we didn't have a car! And off we went to Hendon, where our hosts awaited the delivery.
Every week the Surplus Club collects this food and gives it out for free to the local residents. This is not a food bank because everyone can take what they want regardless of need, and do their bit to avoid wasting food. We were glad to be able to help with this effort and hope to do it again on a regular basis.
It was mission accomplished and we even found time for a coffee and cake back at base. Then it was back home to plan the wardrobe for the next mission!
Thank you to Kat, Danny, Vicki and Paul for the sterling effort!
