Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Emdad Rahman
Older people are feeling more isolated and now more than ever are finding it increasingly difficult to cope. Some of our elders engage in voluntary work but Covid-19 has put a stop to not only that but important things like socialising and receiving visitors.
It really is a grim picture. You can’t put a price on human companionship so well done on GoodGymmers for such an excellent job in filling this grave void.
We had 5 #goodgym hot lunch drops today with a different pick up at Sonali Gardens. The very friendly team at St Hilda’s always have sweet treats available for us volunteers. I’m diabetic but it’s lovely to feel so valued.
One gentleman I visited had a face light up like the radiant sun. It really did make me smile. A Met Police Officer manning a community awareness bus a few feet away noticed and approached me for a chat. I couldn’t outrun the long arm of the law so talked about our elderly, isolation and volunteering with the Old Bill.
The squad were impressed with GoodGym.
The positive news is St Hilda’s will be resuming normal services soon. The sad bit is we may not be able to do these very swift and productive lunch runs but I’m hopeful new opportunities will become available.
There’s always space for lunch and a smile!
