Weed on if you want to discover the Mares tail

On a sweltering Saturday morning, Ellen (who had enjoyed a leisurely family breakfast) met Nathan (who had run Cardiff parkrun 3rd route and reminisced on the winter XC fixture that follows a similar route) to head north to Rhiwbina for a garden mission.

Their 6k route to the mission took on some of Cardiff's finest running routes (western avenue and manor way) before arriving in leafy Rhiwbina village.

Mr M was a little under the weather so his daughter was on hand to explain the task of tidying the front garden (and to provide most welcome glasses of water). Mares tail had take hold in the borders and Mr M hadn't been able to address it this year.

The runners recognised what a nightmare mares tail can be from their own garden and allotment experiences (it's up there with the worst weeds you can think of, a thing of many a gardeners nightmares) and set about removing all traces from the borders.

After an hour or so weeding, deadheading and turning the soil, the front garden was looking in much better shape. Ellen and Nathan headed off on their return journey, which was thankfully predominantly down hill back to the city centre.
