Report written by Mark Gilyead (he/him)
On tonight's Group Run we met at the Bridge House, shared our fave snacks (with an impressive variety actually - and even some healthier options thrown in!) and after a quick warm up we hit the road.
It was a humid evening and I decided we'd take the long undulating route. You'd have thought a long weekend would be refreshing but I certainly felt the opposite! Either way, we made good time and arrived at Alexandra Recreation Ground to help the friends group - it was nice to see Lewisham GoodGymer Linda already getting stuck in!
The task was a challenging one. Recent rain meant the grass around the saplings (many which we helped plant 😏) was growing like crazy, taking up some of the water that the saplings need. So our job was to expand the circles around the base of the trees, cutting back the grass, and replacing it with much mulch to stop grass and weeds growing.
We teamed up in groups of 2, grabbing the shovels and forks, whilst Clare and Alison opted for the buckets and woodchip.
We all got a serious workout but that's what we came for! The team did a fab job, giving 10 trees a much better chance of growing big and strong. 🌳🍒
Nice work gang - MULCH APPRECIATED.
