Before Christmas GoodGym Huddersfield had been delivering leaflets for Forget Me Not Hospice in the Fixby area when one of our number, David Bilton was bitten by a dog as he pushed a leaflet through a letterbox. Well last night we were back in Fixby leafleting once again, but this time armed with specialist dog bite prevention devices....wooden spatulas!

Using a spatula to push open a letterbox and enables us to post the leaflet without getting our fingers anywhere near the canines of an overly aggressive canine on the other side of the door. A perfect control measure to avoid a hazard and the messy business of patching up a GoodGymmer before dispatching them off to casualty for stitches as happened last time.

Anyway as it happened I think we hardly encountered any dogs in the big houses of Fixby last night, but it always pays to be on the safe side, and spatulas have now become standard issue kit for Huddersfield GoodGymmers on leafleting tasks. What we did encounter however was a little wind and a little rain as the remains of Storm Brendan blew through the area. Fortunately Brendan seemed to have done his worst earlier in the afternoon, and as we ran the 3K to Fixby things were if not calm, certainly calmer.

With just 4 GoodGymmers and about 250 flyers to post there was much to be done, but Kati Law, Ben Godfrey, David Bilton and myself quickly found our well practiced leafleting rhythm to ensure all the houses heard about the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice Lottery. After 60 minutes running and posting we were done. Relieved no further blood had been spilt we headed back to the Stadium, safe in the knowledge we had racked up another good deed on our GoodGym totals.

If you fancy joining us we’ll be leafleting in Fixby for Forget Me Not once again next week...don’t forget your spatula!
