Report written by Alice Dalrymple
Today Richard, Mel and I headed to the Haven, a community allotment space to help them prepare a large wildflower area.
Our main task was to lop nettles, cover the area in cardboard, dampen the cardboard using a hose and then covering the space with lots of compost. It was hot work but we made good progress - the longest part was barrowing the compost with Rich and I did (whilst battling over the best barrow) and Mel was chief spreader to make sure there was good coverage.
Highlights of the task included 'accidental' hose showers, meeting a duck who thinks he is a chicken, eating strawberries and having a bounce on the trampoline. We will be returning to the Haven next week - watch this space!
The Haven offers people who have issues around their mental health and/or drug/alcohol misuse their own safe space where they can relax, socialise and be involved with activity's such as gardening, art, sculpture, woodworking and nature conservation. The Haven is a service user led project- everybody involved has the opportunity to plan, develop and maintain the project
