Report written by Sevan
Sevan arrived at Soup Kitchen ten minutes early to try and catch Abigail and Warren before they headed home. He missed them as the first shift had ended early, so was deployed straight to the food counter. Kash arrived soon after to help the clients at the men's clothing section.
This was the first client service shift that GoodGym were helping at following a 6 week shutdown for the Salvation Army hall to be refurbished. In reality, it was hard to see what had been done in that time. The only obvious thing was a fresh coat of white paint.
There was an interesting, or awkward, mix of food in the shopping bags this week, with a bit of a Halloween theme. Pancakes and squirty cream made a perfect pairing. Pizza dough didn't have a natural partner, while a whole pumpkin was a harder sell for many of the clients, with or without a scary face carved into it 🎃.
After a big rush in the first 30 minutes of service, the shopping bags ran out, leaving only veg or chicken biryani to go along with the snack bags. 100 hot meals that had been donated by a local charity were served in total. On the clothing side meanwhile, some new, warm jackets were provided to those who needed them.
At the end of the shift, Kash made a rookie error by asking "so who's packing the cupboard of doom (TM)?" Well, asking that is as good as volunteering for it and she was assigned the last task of the day. Luckily, it turned out that the state of the cupboard wasn't as bad as it used to be.
Ealing Soup Kitchen is a registered charity set up to help the vulnerable and homeless in the area. Nine local churches support our faith-based Soup Kitchen, which has been running since 1973.
