Special Chair Force
2 GoodGymers made their way to help an isolated older person in Southwark.

Great to meet Girija as we met to lend Mr J a hand, removing an armchair to make it easier for him to get around in his flat. The armchair in question was a recliner of reasonable size and weight, reasonable enough to lead Mr J to express some early scepticism about the likely success of the task that lay ahead. However, our collective experience of GoodGym missions had built a niche skill set for getting bulky furniture through unlikely looking routes.
We first used the “on the side and round the corner” technique to get the armchair out of the living room, but it then became apparent that we couldn’t do the same to get it out of the front door. We would next have to use the “recline the recliner” method and get it straightened out enough to pass through. With electric recliners, usually this is easily achieved by plugging it in and pressing a button, but were scuppered by the absence of a plug on the end of the lead. We would have to apply “brute force”, and now I was the sceptical one, but with the two of us pushing the back of the chair down we managed to thoroughly break it. Finally, the small matter of shuffling it out of the flat, down 4 flights of stairs (much enjoying some banter from Mr J on getting part way down the first set of stairs “oh ladies, that’s the wrong armchair”) and over to the collection point.
We were delighted to be able to help free up some space in Mr J’s living room and enjoy (that might be the wrong word) a good workout in the process. Extra kudos to Girija for running over in the tropical conditions and epic brute force skills, hope to see you on another one day!
