Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by York runner
Eight GoodGym folk gathered at West Bank Park on a beautiful cold sunny afternoon to meet up with the wonderful Krisitina from City of York Council
Today's task was to clear leaves from the big kids play area around the play equipment and Kristina had us all tooled up with new brooms, nice big snow shovel type things, leaf grabby things, turbo powered leaf blowers, a nice big tarp and a brand new bulk bag.
Most of the leaves were in the basketball court which was screened off for COVID. We soon broke in though and Egg, Nick, Michal and Jonathan got to work scraping and sweeping while Jonathan entertained us with memories of his summer job as a dustbin man:
In some places there was a danger of maggots down the back of your neck when you lifted the bins
No maggots here today luckily
Babs, Paul, Cara and Stef were busy deleafing the play area while Stef regaled everyone with some truly terrible jokes
I had some really bad news today - my bereavement councillor has died. She must have been really good though because I couldnt give a ****!
I miss Stef and his jokes
Clearing the grass around the play zone meant that I got to play with the Ghostbusters proton pack or maybe it was a leaf blower. Kristina said the only rule was that you shouldnt point it at anyone so I definitely didnt point it at my wife Babs. Honest. Well maybe a bit.
All that was left was for us to drag the tarp and the bulk bag and tip our leaves into the big compost bins. A bit of jumping in the leaves from Stef, Babs and Paul was all it took to make room for the new leaves and then we were away - once Babs had carefully folded the tarp to Kristina's precise requirements.
So much fun to catch up with friendly GoodGym faces and be allowed to work together (socially distanced of course) to complete this essential task - thanks GoodGym!
Conservation work, edible planting, annual fairs and Christmas carols, pop-up cafes, fundraising to develop the park and playground, campaigning against cuts to the park's budgets, locking and unlocking the park each day and night, involving the community in decision-making about the park, children's and family activities, volunteering opportunities, etc etc!!
