Report written by Michael
On a Saturday morning 5 runners gave their time to help keep the river Taff looking its best. 2 keen runners, Richard (joining us from Bristol) and Adam started with parkrun fun before making their way up to Radyr cricket club. Along the route Mikey ran into Amy and Fiona as they discussed the unseen bridge route that 'Google' was showing. They gave up and ran further down the river to another bridge, at least that's some more distance for the weekend exercise.
Soon we were at the cricket club in time for the health and safety briefing, we were to attack the river banks with litter picks in hand and help to remove as much rubbish as possible whilst the water levels were low. For two glorious hours we waved the goodgym flag as we helped alongside the Cardiff rivers group volunteers. Amongst the finds today were multiple shopping trolleys, a couple of tyres, so many shoes and boots, even a sexy heel, coats, cans and so much plastic and a dolls head!
Many, many bags later and it was time to down tools and head back
The work of Cardiff Rivers Group involves: Tackling litter and waste on paths next to watercourses Removal of rubbish from rivers, streams and ponds Clearing blockages and improving water flow Habitat management, such as cutting back overhanging trees that collect water-borne debris and reduce light, and reducing invasive species like Himalayan Balsam Access and amenity improvements Lobbying and consulting with relevant bodies to improve the quality of the environment in South Wales
