Let's have a Recap!
Last night 15 runners ran 7km in total to the community garden at Galleywall Nature Reserve in Bermondsey. The lovely nature reserve is maintained by a committed group of local volunteers, helping to protect this natural home of newts.
Choosing a quieter, more direct route, we arrived in good time to meet Jane and Alan for the evenings task. As ever we were given a list of jobs by the fantastically organised Jane. We set up our new outdoor lights to illuminate the pathway, and the first group got to work shovelling soil from three huge bags into wheelbarrows, before forming a relay to transport it onto the flower beds inside the polytunnel, where Reece was waiting to lift and sift it.
The next group had the task of building a soil bank around the central pond, carrying around 20 bags of soil and being careful not to pour soil all over themselves...David won first prize for getting the most mucky!
A third group set about planting bulbs of Snow Drops, collecting kindling, and chopping wood for a Birthday Bonfire this weekend. In a flash our 30 minutes were up and it was time to say goodbye until next spring, when will will return and hopefully see the Snow Drops appear!
FACT OF THE DAY Newts have the ability to regenerate limbs, eyes, spinal cords, hearts, intestines, plus upper & lower jaws! Incredible - thanks Emily!
On the way back we threw in some Surprise Sprints while staying as a group and maintaining a steady pace, well done everyone!
Next week we will be running 6km overall to our friends at Bell House, a magnificent Grade II Listed building, and centre for educational needs such as dyslexia support. There will be plenty to get stuck into throughout the grounds! Sign up here
See you next week Team. Chin up!
The Galleywall Nature Reserve is a small plot of land which has been owned by Southwark Housing for decades. It was used by the adjacent Galleywall School for some time before the school closed. It has been maintained by a group of volunteers, the Friends of Galleywall Nature Reserve, since 2004, under an ongoing long-term agreement with the council.
