Fresh from their furniture assembly at HT Primary, Nathan and Lucy headed across the road for part two of a bonanza goodgym Thursday. They met Isla from Grow Cardiff and heard all about the organisation while Emma and Mikey negotiated dodgy directions to find the venue. All risk of another innuendo ridden task vanished with the presence of Isla’s daughters, performing their gymnastics on the former bowling green surface – such a responsible bunch, or maybe just the fact Darren was no longer there

Grow Cardiff is a charity that promotes and enables people to grow their own food, through community allotments and outreach work with schools they aim to change the way we think about food.

After a quick “hello” from Adam, who happened to be jogging by, the group set about their task of building and placing some planters, ready to become a fruit and veg patch. Sounded simple enough until the tape measure and spirit level came out. The spacing of the planters important to allow for wheelchair access and arranging inline and level – to avoid it looking rubbish. It will come as no surprise that Mikey claimed the planter building as his primary task, confidently wielding the drill as if an extension of his own body. Nathan, Emma and Lucy set about digging up areas for the planters – a task that 90% of the time would be simple, with soft ground, but alas, the recent rainless weeks made the task quite a workout.

Having set the planters, the group set about filling them. Wheel barrows full of rubble, smashed up wooden pallets and compost were piled in. Two hours had flown by, but the job was done.

After a refreshing reward of twister and iced water the group headed off into the sunset.

"After a refreshing reward of twister ...?! Is that the ice lolly or the game? 😉
