Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)
One thing we absolutely love doing at GoodGym is celebrating when people hit major milestones, such as 50, 100 or even 500 good deeds. It just shows how much commitment, energy and miles our lovely community puts in to making Wandsworth a happier, more united, cleaner and increasingly sustainable place for us to live in. So last night it was brilliant to be able to celebrate Alice's 100th good deed - amazing! She surprised us a little by meeting us at the task, so Alice, you are definitely owed future cake! Well done to you.
On our run down to Christchurch school we realised how quickly the evenings were getting dark. It's definitely headtorch season! It had been a while since we'd been to the school's secret garden, so it was great that we at least got to see how it had changed for a little while before we lost the light. There was fruit and veg everywhere we looked - pumpkins, apples, pears and more. The space is used for the kids to learn about growing their own food and as a nature education space, but it is a lot for the school to take care of.
Our job for the evening was to empty the weed bins and tackle the overgrown area at the back of the garden. We got stuck in, gloves and mini secateurs at the ready. The brambles and stinging nettles made it even more of a challenge, as did the falling light, but after 40 minutes of hard work we could really see a difference. As always, it's amazing to see what many hands can achieve.
After managing to negotiate a very full wheelbarrow out of a very small doorway, we headed back to the school to say goodbye to caretaker Barry who regaled us with stories of MBEs, Wimbledon and David Beckham's mum!
The original plan for our fitness was to do sprints, but we swapped it out for strength and conditioning because our chosen spot wasn't brilliantly lit, and as Annabel put it, we didn't want to run into any tree stumps. Very sensible! So after a good stint knocking out lunges, squats, and planks of all varieties, we were done for the evening. Next week we're back at Doddington for our regular visit, followed by our monthly pub quiz - hope you can make it!
