Picking & sorting for Sustrans Sheffield

Sheffield Report written by Tom Mutton

After an initial 'design concept' visit we returned to the Sustrans Sheffield lock up to finish what we had started and make the lock up more organised and in doing so make it better for other volunteers to quickly grab what they needed tool wise before heading out to improve and maintain our fantastic National Cycle Network!

We welcomed a new runner this week. Give a whoop, hola, cheer and follow to:

Nathanael

Thanks for joining us Nathanael and hope to see you back next week!

We split the group as the space was small and litter was at large! Some got to picking the litterbug hotspots whilst some of us got on with finishing tidying and organising the lock up.

Rachel did a fantastic job finishing the tool racking, ready for tools to be safely organised and maximise space in the lock up.

Tom and Annie set about re-organising other areas of the lock up to maximise the efficency of the space!

Annie was even planning colour schemes for the walls!

After we had spent our time there, the place was looking more organised than ever and ready for future efficient and organised volunteering!

Nice work everyone!

Mulch Ado About Nothing

Sheffield Report written by James Smith

3 rouge clad runners set off from The Showroom cinema in search of pastures new.  These pastures were to be found at Heeley People's Park, where the grass is always greener.

Upon arriving at the children's play area of the park, we found Rob all set up and ready for us. We also welcomed into our team Michelle and Linda who were waiting for us at the park.

Take heed, the woodchip is always browner on the other side!

Our task for the evening was to turn over all of the woodchip on the active play areas. As they say, the woodchip is always browner on the other side; a valuable life lesson.!

During our timber tossing, Ines disclosed that she plays badminton, and it turns out she has played against James' mum. The village that is Sheffield strikes again!

Turfing over a new leaf

As we were ploughing our way through the play areas, a member of the public was so impressed by our actions that he decided to get stuck in himself; a potential future GG member for sure! Our mini, mighty team managed to turn over all of the woodchip in one area so quickly that we had time to complete a second.

After a solid shifting session, we sewed it up, said goodbye to Reliable Rob, then set off back to base. Some Indian running was on the cards for the return journey. Though on this particular occasion it did not transpire due to a lack of return runners.

Painting Whiter shade of Pale.

Sheffield Report written by Annie Anthony Mays

8 Goodgymmers paint the interior of The Regather space upstairs. Fun, laughter and various quotes were shared amongst us all. Lots of high walls were unreachable even with ladders and chairs. I did think of climbing up to paint but too risky. So we have to leave the high unpainted walls for another day to abseil if permitted. Paint looked yellow against the cream walls but when dried it looks white. We were all curious with the various shades of White but we did it successfully. Well done team!

Get a shift on 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

Sheffield Report written by Rachel (she/her)

Natalie and Rachel both donned our running shoes to get a shift on to Mr M and get shifting his furniture.

The job was a simple one - swap over a sofa and 2 armchairs to allow him a more comfortable view of the TV. A little planning was required of how to manoeuvre things, but all went smoothly and done and dusted before our heart rates even managed to settle before our runs back home!

Grubs Up

Sheffield Report written by Rachel (she/her)

Myself and Natalie both volunteered as hosts at Foodcycle this month (although on separate days).

They provide a free weekly meal and company to all who wish to attend, all made from waste food.

We took on the role of hosting - welcoming serving drinks and food and washing up at the end. It's enjoyable and you get a free dinner for your effort! (we even got big sharing bags of crisps to take home this week)

Join us next time - we'll plan to go again in a couple of months. Full disclosure, I forgot to take any photos, so used one from last time we went!
