Rain, Deer & Deliver: GoodGym Barnet Spreads the Cheer

Barnet Report written by Paul Salman

We gathered at the Phoenix Cinema, full of festive spirit and only slightly intimidated by the kind of rain that looks like it’s been booked specially to test our resolve.

But, as every seasoned GoodGymer knows, the weather is never the boss of us. Sure enough, by the time we set off, the rain eased just enough for us to get moving in good spirits towards Grange Big Local estate in East Finchley.

We were meeting Emma and her brilliant volunteers from Hope North London, who are working hard to support families on the estate with Christmas lunches and festive essentials. Our job: deliver their Christmas packages to every home across the estate.

Once paired up, we were off. I teamed up with Rachael, and between us we somehow managed to do three blocks — popping back to reload like festive posties on a mission. Other teams powered through their routes too, and in no time the whole estate had received their Christmas deliveries.

With the job done and the warmth of good deeds carrying us home, we jogged back to the Phoenix for our stretch-down,

Then it was straight on to the White Lion for our Christmas get-together — good food, good chat, lots of laughter, and plenty of cheer to round off a brilliant year. let’s shout out for Narina on her first outing what a great one to be involved with!

⭐ Milestone Shout-Outs

A big festive cheer to: • Daniel M. – approaching 100 good deeds • George T. – also closing in fast on the 100 mark and for sorting out the Christmas meal! • Narina](/v3/profile/narina-bira) first ever GoodGym session (welcome!)

A fantastic outing and a reminder of what GoodGym Barnet does best: turning up, supporting our community, and having a brilliant time doing it.

RearRangerring the Woodland Camp

Barnet Report written by George Ttoouli (he/him)

Three Goodgymmers ran from the Phoenix to Highgate Woods, on a lovely, clear post-rain evening. Theo and George, Barnet regulars, were joined by Michael, who travelled from Tower Hamlets to join us. Michael joined Goodgym during our January challenge this year and he now tries to do two group sessions per week. Great to have him with us! And well done to Theo for getting out after an intense sprinting session the day before.

Our run took us through Cherry Tree Woods, and out the back gate onto Fordington, where the actual cherry trees are dropping ripe (and unripe - probably the birds/squirrels) cherries all over the pavements there. We then trotted through backstreets to the Capital Ring, and up the hill into Highgate Wood to meet Ranger Cindy at the cafe.

It's not quite the end of nesting season, so Cindy didn't want to disturb any late fledglings with an ivy bash. Instead, she took us to a rough-and-ready bivouac put together by children and parents visiting the woods. Despite a list of rules to follow from Cindy - don't dig up wood that's become part of the ecosystem, don't take live branches, and dismantle it all when you're done - the bivouac was still standing.

So we got to work, de-camping the logs and carrying them across the clearing to create a natural boundary. A good bit of weightlifting and jogging back and forth across the clearing, and we were done in no time at all. After a quick chat about the rescue critters Cindy had been dealing with this spring - hedgehogs and a jay - we trotted off, with a promise to be back to take care of the ivy once the nests were clear.

Litter-ally Fit: GoodGym’s Coldfall Cleanup.

Barnet Report written by Paul Salman

The Coldfall Chronicles: A Heroic Ramble Through the Woods of Barnet

On a balmy spring evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden hue over the dense foliage of Coldfall Woods, a band of intrepid adventurers assembled. Their mission: to aid the venerable Linda and the Friends of Coldfall Woods in their noble quest to rid the forest’s edge of litter and debris. This was no ordinary gathering; it was the GoodGym Barnet brigade, a motley crew of runners, walkers, and cyclists. The Assembled Heroes: • Freya embarking on her maiden voyage with GoodGym Barnet, displayed the enthusiasm of a seasoned explorer. Her strides were purposeful, her spirit indomitable, leading the charge with a vigor that belied her novice status. give her a cheer! • Sally, the seasoned sentinel, took up the rear, ensuring no comrade was left behind. Her experience was a beacon, guiding the group with a steady hand and an encouraging word. • Ewelinaand George, the steadfast foot soldiers, opted for a brisk march, navigating the terain with precision and arriving at the meeting point ahead of the fleet-footed runners—a testament to their superior planning. • Theodore, the youthful chronicler, wielded his camera ( or more like my mobile phone!) like a sword, capturing moments of levity and toil, urging his compatriots to strike poses that would immortalize their efforts in the annals of GoodGym lore.( yes the classic jazz hands.) • Lucinda, a regular presence, brought consistency and cheer, her dedication shining as brightly as the evening sun filtering through the canopy. • Subham, whose past exploits in the realm of frisbee were the stuff of legend, joined the fray despite nursing an injury—a true testament to his unwavering commitment. • Paul, the seasoned runner, with tales about the merits of yoga and the learnings from his dog Gus!

The Quest:

Armed with litter pickers and an unyielding sense of purpose, the group ventured into the underbrush, uncovering hidden caches of refuse that marred the natural beauty of the woods. Each piece of litter collected was a small victory, a step towards restoring the forest to its pristine state. The task, though humble, was carried out with the zeal of knights on a crusade! As twilight descended, the heroes reconvened at the Phoenix, their mission accomplished.

The GoodGym Barnet team may not seek the spotlight, but their consistent efforts in Coldfall Woods ( and other good causes are available ) reflect true heroism.

Up working pasture bedtime, doing Goodgym things

Barnet Report written by George Ttoouli (he/him)

Six sturdy Goodgymmers met at the Phoenix for our regular group session. We welcomed Lucy for the first time, a keen and capable runner, as well as our regular crew, Beattie and Rachel, Anthony and our excellent photographer, Theodore.

Following a quick warm up down the side of the cinema (with thanks to Rachel for the evenings conversational topic: things you thought were bad at the time, but turned out to be good - lots of COVID stories), we crossed the nearby junction then scooted our way through the quieter roads and back alleys to Long Lane Pasture for our evening deeds. There, met by our inimical host Donald, we were handed ploggers, rakes, a pitchfork and barrows and split into two teams.

Team one jogged around the site litter-picking and tidying, while team two began clearing dead brambles to pile into a dead hedge. The second task is making way for a silver birch to be planted near the gates in memory of Wayne, a key figure in the Pasture's founding, who helped the community secure the original lease from Barnet Council. The brambles were piled into a dead hedge that will also stop visitors to the site from crossing through a key 'bee lane', from the apiaries to the nearby flower meadow.

With a solid four barrows of brambles and a sack of rubbish out of the way, we then jogged back to the Cinema, satisfied we'd made our impact on ourselves and for the community.
