Brambles, Bricks and Bugs

Saturday 2nd October 2021

Written by Liz Pharoah

On a rather wet Saturday morning, 4 GoodGym members cycled and walked to the Positive Choices allotment.

It was great to head back here to support as we have supported them before and the progress made on the allotment area is amazing.

Today's task was to clear an area for an orchard. We had many brambles to dig up so Nigel and Kathering set too on these whilst Laura and I had many bricks to move so created a bug hotel with the bricks.

Luckily, although it was a bit rainy, we were finished before the massive downpour.

Go big or gourd home

Tuesday 15th September 2020

6 GoodGym runners met at the Positive Choices allotments to complete a range of gardening tasks. These included mowing, weeding and tidying up the allotment space so that it is ready to be used.

We also spent some time admiring the produce. There was plenty of beetroot, lots of lovely chard, corn, some courgettes and a pumpkin - perfect for a photo!

Pour on water, pour on water!

Tuesday 11th August 2020

Four runners braved the heat to help with the upkeep of the Positive Choices allotment. Such a big change from the last time we were here- a lot of work has been put in, and the allotment is thriving!

It was a short but sweet task tonight. An old bath is used to store water on the allotment, and it was so hot we were tempted to get in! We fetched pails of water to fill the bath and then watered all the wonderful plants in the allotment, which included squash, courgettes, beans, strawberries and herbs.

There was nothing else needed apart from watering the plants, but we will hopefully be back in a couple of weeks to help with some painting :)

Weed all about our thorny issues as we gave this overgrown allotment some (g)love!

Tuesday 10th September 2019

10 GoodGym runners ran 7km to support Positive Choices at their Radford Road Allotment. It was great this week to be joined (and led) by Becky who will be the leader of Warwick and Leamington Spa GoodGym when it launches later on in the year.

After the greeting speech and finding out about all the busy GoodGym runners over the past week, from Nuneaton 10km to Wolf Run and Silverstone 10km- Good work all.

On a warmer than expected night, we arrived to be greeted by Jenny from the group Positive Choices who showed us the allotment and explained our clearing task- with new tools too.

The brambles and weeds were not a match for our team though and paths were cleared and brambles taken down. There is still some work to be done and it would be great to spend more time supporting this allotment project in the future.

Becky then led us back to complete some hill reps where we worked on our form and using our arms to power up hills more efficiently.

Thanks Becky.

See you all next week, Liz x
