Birmingham Report written by Jonny Carter
14 people ran 3.5km to plant some trees on the Canal
It was welcome to two new GoodGymerâs tonight, with Andy and Dave joining us for the first time. Please give them a cheer! We set on our way with Lee being the front marker and myself taking on the role of back marker as I was struggling somewhat with a calve strain I had picked up earlier that day! We ran just over a mile to the Canal and River Trust offices where we met Nick who bought the trees down for us to plant.
Papped!!
To make tonight even more exciting we had a full media team joining us both from The Guardian newspaper and the Canal and River Trustâs own media section! Firstly, the group got videoed and photographed running on the canal, I had more photos taken of me then when Kim Kardashian does her grocery shopping and there were interviews galore. After all this, we eventually got on with planting the trees! This was done in no time with a good numbered group tonight. Once the âplantathonâ was done there was a couple more videos taken of the group running and a few pics for good measure and it was ready for our run back! Keep an eye out for the Guardian online this week!
Who is the best planker?!
Once nearly back we stopped in St Paulâs square where we did some press ups, Phill smashing them out like usual, followed by some core work, both John and Sandy showing great determination. Then it was onto the grass for some lung busting burpees, (everyone loves a burpeeâŠ..yeah right đ), Sophie and Alex working hard, putting their all into each set. Once this was done we finished off with a plank challenge, who could hold it the longest? Well Sandy and Dave showed they had great cores both holding the plank for 3 whole minutes! Well done fellas!
Once done and everyone exhausted it was time for a gentle run back to base, for a bit of a stretch Next week we will be out doing good again, it would be great if you could join us sign up here.

We drew a few interested onlookers as well on the bridge over the canal! Thanks for the stretches Johnny, really sorted out my leg for the run home. Hope yours is alright.

9 people ran 5.5km to put our canal adoption signs up
It was great to welcome two new runners at tonightâs group run, itâs fantastic to have Jennifer and Alex on board. It was also great to see our âLondon GoodGymerâ Chloe, who joined us tonight, I hope you all enjoyed it!
Presentation time!
Tonight, was a momentous night for GoodGym Brum, we had the presentation of our canal adoption certificate which included lots of pictures and a talk from Nick, part of the Canal and River Trust on why us adopting the canal is so important. So, a little later than normal we got on our way. We split up into two groups, each putting up three canal adoption signs on our part of the canal.
Intervals
Once all the signs were done, we had the usual selfie from Chan (I tried but Iâm not in that guyâs league)! Then it was into some interval training 6 rounds of about 150m of hard effort. Aidan and Sam led the way, while Garry and Chan put in their usual hard work. Once the intervals were completed we had a steady run up towards St Paulâs square, adding in a quick hill sprint on the way. Chloe led the way showing a great arm action.
A bunch of plankers!
Once in St Paulâs square I handed over to Aidan who took the group through a heart racing, core burning, tricep torching, leg beastingâŠâŠâŠerr you get the picture, circuit session! Jennifer and Chloe showed great effort all the way through. Chan and John put in some reeet effort despite a couple of ânigglyâ injuries, Garry was blasting out those tricep dips like he had spent a six year stint in solitary confinement! Alex and Sam really put that core through its paces with some great plank work!
Next week we will be out doing good again, well you will be as Iâm on me hols đ Donât worry though the group will be left in the very capable hands of Aidan, so please come a long and join him sign up here.
