Kingston upon Thames Report written by Rachel White
A chilly night tonight but not quite freezing so what better time to weatherproof the Wheels For All shed against the elements. Dave, Rachel, Tom and Derryn travelled by foot and bike to the Weir Athletics Track - a great resource for local athletes - where the Wheels For All shed is kept. It houses different types of accessible bikes so people with physical disabilities can still enjoy getting out for a cycle. It's a new shed and hadn't been weatherproofed so that was our job for tonight.
We met Jane, Jade, Martel and Emily there and they were already making great progress. Martel was on a ladder doing the top section, and the others were painting the weatherproofing onto the shed according to their height and reach. We topped up some more foil containers with the fluid, grabbed the paintbrushes and got to work.
Halfway through the session, the concrete slabs were moved to the shed and the muscles among us helped to move them - they were very, very heavy. The shed had a ramp but it went straight onto grass - over time that patch would get muddy and the wheels could easily get stuck. The concrete slabs create more of a path to the athletics track so less mud would get transported around and it will make it easier to get the bikes in and out of the shed.
Very soon our hour was up and we had just about got round the shed in that time. We've booked in another trip to do a second coat of weatherproofing in May - take a look and sign up for the session.
