No home to roost

Windsor and Maidenhead Report written by Slough runner

Didem and I met at the task and our first job was to trim some trees near the play area.

We then moved some pallets and tried to move the chickens and their roost but this wascq bigger job than we realised so we had to leave that for another day.

The Bug's Head, Buzzingham Palace and The Grub Inn are open for business!

Windsor and Maidenhead Report written by Jess Smith

It was great to see 5 Goodgymers out in Windsor for tonight's task. We met at the lovely Trinity St Stephen's First School and found our task leader Sonia and other parents from the school.

She explained to us that the Year 4 parents had brought 3 bug hotels, as a leaving gift, for the school to create a pollinator garden and help aid the children's eco-learning. To create this wildlife haven we needed to dig a border flowerbed to allow space for the hotels and loads of pollinator friendly plants and flowers.

We got dug in straight away creating the flowerbed by removing the top layer of grass and soil. We were aided by some of the children who watered the ground for us to make it softer. Once the grass was removed, we turned the soil over and then added the peat-free compost. With our best Charlie Dimmock impressions we then arranged the plants and flowers, making sure we mixed colours, heights and varities to create a welcoming haven for bugs and insects to explore and make their home.

We think the little garden is a great legacy for the children to leave as they move on to their new schools and we hope that many children, and bugs, will enjoy this little haven.

Off our trolley

Windsor and Maidenhead Report written by Slough runner

Didem and I met at the school and after being signed in and given passes we were escorted through the school to our outdoor work area.

Our first task was to top up some new planters with compost. We then moved round the corner to line and fill some further planters. This also involved a couple of trips across the playground to collect more compost with a trolley that was more challenging to manoeuvre than a supermarket trolley.

We also tidied up an older planter, removing some leaves and litter.

It was a perfect task for the small team of two and before we knew it our time was up and we tiptoed back through the school (so we didnt disturb the stage production of Alice in Wonderland.

A cracking time

Windsor and Maidenhead Report written by Slough runner

It was round two of soil shifting at Windsor Girls Schools tonight.

Didem, Helen and Jen met at The Binoy and set off walking. They soon bumped into Agni on her way to the task, followed by Mandy catching our tails as we arrived at the school. Adam met us at the task.

Equipped with a wheel barrow, spades, a fork, two trolleys and 3 bins we soon got to work moving the soil from a lawn at the front to a large planter at the rear of the school, working on pairs lightened the load.

Lots of to-ing and fro-ing, chat, laughter and Mandy's jokes helped the time fly by. Just time to share round the Heroes chocolates Gina had supplied for her 'Goodgym heroes' and a round of activity cards including counting in different languages and it was time to head our separate ways.
