My first GoodGym

Southwark Report written by Mayuko

I ran good 20min with a brisk pace on the Thames from my house to get the Surrey Dock Farm. On arrival, I walked around the farm and spotted many new lives: piglets, new-born lambs (accordingly born between Mon and Fri!). Full of energies were filled in and around the place. It felt so uplifting!

*Today, 8 runners went to Surrey Docks Farm to do some digging and lay some woodchip for their Plot to Shop project, where adults with learning disabilities grow fruit and vegetables for the farm shop. As today is the day of Earth Hour, it was exciting to support a project that doesn't just teach people about nature, but give them the opportunity to learn skills that enable them to really engage with nature too.* Surrey Docks Farm is a working community farm in London that engages local people to learn about farming and food provenance, and GoodGym runners have been able to help out there a few times already and always enjoy lending a hand. Some of us had snuck in a sneaky parkrun at Southwark Park beforehand, others had joined in having seen social media about Earth hour. In any case, we enjoyed meeting Rachel at the farm who gave us our task; levelling and then woodchipping paths around the raised beds used for the Plot to Shop project. This would help maintain the beds, and make things safer for those using the space in coming months. The group enjoyed working away at that, while also digging a trench to house and protect a water pipe - some of the runners wanted even more of an upper body workout and tidied up a large pile of wood so it's safely out of the way. One 🦊 jumped out of the pile at one point, I think we might have given him a little surprise! Once the task was wrapped up, we headed off (and took our time to see some of the animals on our way). Thanks to all at the the farm for having us!

Romain earned their community cape by completing their first community mission.

Romain completed a community mission. Instead of watching TV or lying in bed, Romain was out there making their community a better place to be. For making that choice they have earned the community cape.

Oops, we soiled the (flower) bed

Southwark Report written by Emily (She/her)

Eight runners joined us today at Telegraph Hill Under 5s Playclub from Southwark, Lambeth and Wandsworth including first time runner Romain - welcome to the Good Gym family!!

With many arriving after completing some windy / hilly / speedy parkruns at Peckham Rye and Hilly Fields, we met Dave who introduced us to the club and the task. Telegraph Hill Playclub is a community playclub for under 5s and their carers - with sessions run by volunteers, admission is free and their were plenty of families making the most of the dry day!

Their tag line is Drop in and Play - drop in and sieve more like!

The aim was to help transform the gardens - including preparing beds for a sensory garden and fruit and vegetable patches. On one side of the fence, Frances made a flower bed and planted 100 daffodil bulbs and on the other side David and Scott were digging, building and preparing even more flower beds. The rest of us were in the main garden. Between us, we sieved what felt like tonnes of soil, separating out stones, glass and random bolts to ensure the kids could play safely and enjoy their garden. We then emptied the beautifully sieved soil into flower beds a plenty and gave the tyre pots and general area a good old clean too.

The kids and parents were all very intrigued too so we did our bit to spread the GoodGym name and Theo found a toad - is there a rule about animals joining GoodGym?

We spent two enjoyable hours working away stopping only for a much deserved break for tea and cake. Thanks to everyone for making such an awesome impact to the playclub - Dave and Melissa were ecstatic with our work so hopefully we'll be back again soon!

We've had a dog at GoodGym Lewisham before now and she even has her own GG bandana, not sure they come in toad sizes though!
