Barrows of Fun in the Sun

Sheffield Report written by Ash

An amazing turn out of 38 runners helped out Heeley Development Trust by digging, shifting and spreading top quality mulch over the flower beds.

Shout out to Bee for completing her 100th good deed, and to new runners Holly and Alex for coming on their first group runs. Awesome work!

After a quick briefing from Fantastic Frank and Regal Rob, the Goodgymers split into three teams using shovels, barrows, buckets and rakes. With a busy road to cross Frank and Rob kept us safe by being road marshals.

Staying at the park we did a circuit of six exercise made up of Mountain Climbers, Squats, Lunges, Press ups, Planks and Star Jumps, before a quick group photo and the run back to base.

Don't be an April Fool, pick up a tool!

Sheffield Report written by Tom Mutton

Big @GGSHF welcome to first time runner;

John Follin

Click John's name to support him and give him cheers!

It was the first run of spring time last night and the extra hour of daylight was very welcomed! We gathered and gave a BIG GGSHF GROUP CHEER to AMAZING ASH who was on his 100th deed! Massive congrats Ash!

At the Showroom we split into 2 groups;

  1. Tom & Mike
  2. Steve & Kim

A tough climb to the task meeting point last night, heading further along the National Cycle Network than ever before to meet with SUSTRANS SIMON who had some lovely looking new tools for us to use including;

  • Safety goggles
  • New loppers
  • New brooms!

On arrival, each group got briefed on the evenings tasks, got tooled up and straight to work, sweeping, litter picking, chopping to make the section of the NCN cleaner, greener and wider for all to use, including one of our GG runners who uses the route daily to commute!

After a brief, but energetic session we brought tools back to Simon's van and headed for home with a couple of fitness tasks thrown in on route including;

  • Tunnel time
  • Group Circle Squats #we'renotaculthonest

We were stretching ourselves last night with a 4.4km route each way with the first leg mainly uphill. A great effort by all and despite a few grumbles we we're all alive and well at the end.

“If you want something you've never had, you must be willing to do something you've never done.” ― Thomas Jefferson

Until next time, happy running :)

  • Mound building

After a solid effort from all we headed back via an under pass for our very special 25 photo to commemorate @GGSHEFF being the 25th of the soon to be 50 locations in the country!

Following the photo we paired up for some quick circuits which included;

  • High knees
  • Wall sit
  • Stair sets
  • Floor to Ceilings

On arrival back at base we heard the latest news and headed in for a drink and a chat.

Until next time, happy running!

Frankly my dear, we do give a garden

Sheffield Report written by Sam Needham

First of all, welcome to Gill & Chris.

James reached his angelic 100 good deeds, wearing his literal & metaphoric wings with pride.

Rob surpassed 50 good deeds thanks to an earlier visit to his coach, while Dan reached his 50. They both wore their bow ties with style.

A total of 30 GoodGymmers made their way to help Heeley Development Trust with continuing to tidy up a triangle of green garden space which acts as a welcome area to Heeley for people coming up Myrtle Road.

We merrily litter picked, raked, pruned, weeded & gathered - head torches lighting our way - transforming the triangle.

Our fitness for the evening involved hills - something the troops have come to expect whenever I'm in charge, and I hate to disappoint. So up the mountainous Myrtle Road we went, stopping at the top to enjoy the view of the lights of the city twinkling away far below. As Tori said:

At least there's a good view...

We then headed back to base, but not before doing some intervals up the hilly Howard Street, using the lamp posts as markers.

Finishing off with some stretches, we the went into the Showroom to enjoy some 100 good deed tiffin in honour of James, made by Suze. It was good.

Happy running (walking is fine too!) - and see you next time for more adventures, when normal service will be resumed with Terrific Tom back in the lead.

Thomas Holmes earned their community cape by completing their first community mission.

Thomas completed a community mission. Instead of watching TV or lying in bed, Thomas was out there making their community a better place to be. For making that choice they have earned the community cape.

Painting at full Reach

Sheffield Report written by Mike Jones

Six of us went over to Reach South Sheffield which is a great community organisation that helps disadvantaged people within the local area. They've recently been the victim of a couple of break-ins, where their poly-tunnels were vandalised and some plants dug up. Our task was to paint the top of their perimeter fence with anti-climb paint.

Roisha gave us the paint, brushes, gloves and ladders that ensured the job wasn't too out of REACH. While five of us got on with this job, Tom set about the important task of putting up signs advertising the paint. Hopefully this will help deter the miscreants!

The folks at Reach were very friendly and even offered us a cuppa. In the two hours we were there we managed to get round the whole boundary of the grounds which was very satisfying!

We look forward to coming back here in the future, perhaps to help repair their poly-tunnels. In the meantime hopefully the paint will put off anyone trying to disrupt the great work that these guys do.

Relight my fire! Plogging is my only desire!

Sheffield Report written by Tom Mutton

Remember remember the 5th of November with gunpowder, treason and PLOG...

The 'Guys' were on fire last night and couldn't wait to make the Steel City clean after Halloween! They were in it to bin it and all fired up to make a big bang on the streets and drop a clean bomb on Duke St & City road.

We had a gentle jog to the bottom of Duke St which is where we would commence our PLOG with the end destination being the Manor Park bonfire at the top of the road. It was 'on your sparks, get ready, GO as we split into two teams, one on either side of the road and commenced the clean!

The gang ran off with a bang, Suze was milking it a bit and Katherine wheeled her way up City road with her awesome litter picker pro in hand, it were a bin bin situation!

On the way up we had fireworks going off all over, creating a great backdrop to the run!

Once we got to the end we followed the masses out from the show and then took a left to avoid the crowds and get some fitness in...

We stopped at the amazing Cholera Monument for an arty farty group photo and chose this as our place for a quick bit of fitness that this week included a quick circuit consisting of;

  • Sprints
  • Fireworks
  • Split lunges
  • Sumo squats
  • Squat jumps

On route back we headed over the graffiti bridge and back to base for a quick stretch and headed in to talk about our fave rubbish movies inc litter, litter bang bang!

Thanks to everyone for being such an en-fused group for tonights task, really appreciated!

VEGAS BABY! Stevie G...

Goodgymers, pickers & plog I know of no reason The volunteer Legion Should for any reason be forgot

Mulch of a Mulchness

Sheffield Report written by Tom Mutton

We welcomed a new runner along this week.

Whoop, hola and cheer for

NICK WEBSTER!

We were back off to Heeley People's Park last night to see FANTASTIC FRANK & RADIANT ROB and to continue to help them with the upkeep of the fantastic community owned and run space that benefits all around it as well as visitors and passers through.

Dig me a winner!

For starters we had a crack team of 6 shovelers that got straight to task with ROB digging trenches at the side of the paths to ensure the paths will remain usable and un-damaged once the winter wetness comes down. With nothing but head torches to light the way, it was spadey business...

Mulch a-do about nothing

The rest of the crew got onto the MONSTER MULCH which really was monstrous with a huge pile that needed to be collected into buckets, moved to various areas and then spread. AMAZING ANNIE & SUPER STEVE were on hand to whittle out any inefficiencies and get the chain going as smooth and efficient as poss!

The park was worse than the bite - James Smith

In no time at all, huge progress could be seen in the park.

We downed tools and took advantage of the street lit hill to get some team hill sprints in. In teams of 5 we sprinted up a small will and recovered on the way down, getting a good 5 reps in!

Until next time, happy running :)
