Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Huw Davies
As is becoming customary, the snow swept in on Tuesday afternoon ahead of our weekly group run. However, eight runners braved the freezing temperatures and biting wind to head over to Saffron Lane Sports Centre to help clear one of their borders overlooking the athletics track.
On arrival the member of staff who greeted us expressed her surprise that we'd turned up given the weather conditions - little did she know that it takes more than the weather to stop the GoodGymmers from their quest to spread goodness around the city. We armed ourselves with an array of gardening tools and headed round to the area we'd been asked to clear to find a sizeable border with plenty of weeds and ivy for us to get stuck into. We quickly got to work, filling up all the bin bags we'd been given in a little over 15 minutes. When we returned to the centre to ask for more we were again greeted with surprise that we'd managed to fill the ones we had so quickly!
Despite the inclement conditions making an outdoor task far from ideal, everybody worked their socks off to get as much cleared as we could in the time we had. There definitely needs to be a Jack Frost badge introduced by GoodGym for people carrying out tasks in sub-zero conditions!
With nine bin bags filled with weeds and ivy we returned the tools to the centre and ran briskly back to base and then swiftly on to The Black Horse who rather inconsiderately hadn't got the fire on for us - must phone ahead and request it prior to the next social!
As we defrosted in the pub I certainly felt proud to be part of such a wonderful group of people who got out there and got on with delivering what we'd promised to do in the face of adversity!
We return to an indoor task next back with our friends from Scope - Jimmy is already looking forward to the chance to dress up!
Thank you to everyone for tonight, a great effort!
