Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Katie Welford
38 excellent people covered two tasks, raking leaves and spreading woodchip for kids and community. Then ate cake
It was a warm autumnul evening and this was great news as we had two outdoor tasks to get on with.
Task 1 was led by David. Here's his report: After a short run to Moorlands Estate, we started playing the game "Where is the allotment?" We probably spent a good 10 minutes trying to find it from different angles before getting confirmation from Katie of its location. We finally arrived there (Hooray!) where the lovely Karen explained the task:
In no time, the team of 12 people came up with the best strategy possible, filling wheel barrels, buckets and anything we could find. And a few minutes before the end of the task: SUCCESS! The path was created and the entire pile was shifted inside. Such an impressive team work!
"I thought we would never finish the task" said Rebecca Nellis. "Sacré bleu, and I thought we would never start the task :-)" said David.
We left Karen really happy and thankful.
Task 2 was led by Katie and John H: Katie led a small group the 1-mile down to Brixton Road Youth Centre, whilst John H led the rest on a 4.5km route to get a nice leg stretch. Once there, we set about our regular job of really clearing up some leaves. We raked them and bagged them like neverbefore and really did a great job. Howard the caretaker was delighted and with that we ran back to base. Once at Papa's, we did some calf conditioning and then some jump squat high fives. This was hard and Katie made everyone do quite a lot, with mixed enjoyment it has to be said but the glutes of Brixton will be thankful in the end.
After stretches we all went inside and enjoyed Tom H's Italian Tiramusu and David's 'Forgotten Bake' a family recipe "Tuiles aux amandes de Grand-mère" (Grandma's Almond Rooftiles), which were both really delicious and lessened the pain of Liam being out of Bake Off.
The Loughborough Farm is a community food growing project in Loughborough Junction. The Farm is well attended and goes from strength to strength since its launch in August 2013, which GoodGym Lambeth contributed to. They are now in the process of building a network of growing spaces around Loughborough Junction on pieces of land that are currently derelict or underused. Food grown is for local consumption and volunteers get training that can suppport them in finding employment.
