Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)
It was all blue skies when we met last night for our Wednesday session but somebody who shall remain nameless (sorry...) may have jinxed it straight off the bat by commenting how the rain looked like it was going to hold off.
Cue arriving at our task to meet Jo from Wild Chiswick and the downpour starting.
Still, not to be deterred we cracked on with the many jobs Jo had lined up for us. The wildlife plot allotment is part of Wild Chiswick's ongoing mission to create more wildlife friendly green spaces for better biodiversity across Chiswick. A strong healthy biodiversity is also good news for humans.
There was soil to be dug, logs to chop, ivy to clear, bracken to sort through, and a dead hedge to create. This last job was the second week in a row where we had been trusted to build something long lasting for the local wild habitat, so we feel like we're beginning to get the hang of it!
It was good to keep moving so that we didn't completely freeze, so it was all action stations as Divya transported logs to where Jenni and Michelle where creating the hedge, Luis shoveled a whole load of compost, Tish, Florian, Emily and Pippa loaded bag after bag of sticks and twigs and Jon and Lucy cleared masses of ivy after already completed the log sawing task - all overseen by the lovely Debra and Jo.
Before long we were more than slightly damp but had managed to get a lot done, so we headed back to base for some stretches.
Next week we're prepping the ground to plant snowdrops and then the following Saturday we have a community mission to plant them.
Stay happy GoodGym - and dry!
