19 GG Yorkies ran to Greenfields Garden to dig one last trench and finish the land drainage system!

After a little warm-up, we set off with Lizzie as our back-marker.

On our arrival, Bill from Edible York challenged us to complete a second task within the time, which was to shift a big pile of grassy compost a few metres left. Challenge accepted. At least, challenge accepted if we could find where it was because the community garden was absolutely pitch black. With a group of people wielding tools in the dark, Aron wondered if the police had ever been called to a GoodGym task by mistake.

This just always feels a bit illegal at night

This was our third trench to complete the set at Greenfields, so some of the group were very experienced when it came to land drainage. The trench was underway in no time at all and wheelbarrows of soil were redistributed to other parts of the site.

Over in the compost zone, Bob was unsuccessfully attempting to shift compost with a spade. I have to hand it to him for the effort but I managed to locate him a (slightly bent out of shape) fork which was a much better tool for the job.

With team trench going so well, Leanne popped over to see if she could assist with the compost shifting.

Not only have I not got a fork, I've also got an ineffective spade

A solid foundation of pea-shingle was being tipped into the trench with brilliant accuracy and compost team 2 tagged in to save the arms of compost team 1. The final bit of the task involved filling in the trench with chunks of turf, a bit like a massive, dirty jigsaw.

With the new drainage pipe installed and all the compost shifted, we ran back to celebrate our good deed with some sally squats and of course, 20 press ups for the November Press Up Challenge.

Next week I'm a year older so there'll be a special celebratory workout and post-run cake too! You can sign up here
