Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Emma Wilkins
We arrived at the Scout Hall to meet our smiley host, Sarah who told us all about Cwtch Together. The charity provides play sessions for disabled children with tailored activities to meet their needs every Saturday. Having recently found a new home at the Scout Hall in Grangetown, the charity needed some help to dig out earth ready for a concrete slab to be fitted. The slab would then house storage facilities for the play equipment. This is currently being stored at a local storage company at high cost.
We got to work immediately, recognising the scale of the challenge! Sarah and her family had already made a fantastic start clearing some of the overgrowth but there was more to do. Firstly, we moved a number of patio slabs to clear the path, carefully avoiding the spiders and creepy crawlies. We then split into two groups to tackle each end of the plot.
Mikey, Marie and Martin helped shift a huge fence panel and metal drum out of the way to enable the digging to continue. Emma, Nathan and Andrew began digging out the plot and moving the earth with some help from Sarah's brother, Mike. The complicating factor was that the earth had to be thrown through a metal fence in the hope that it would land in the wheelbarrow at the other side! We quickly established the most efficient process we could and made good progress.
Whilst we didn't quite finish the task, we agreed that we would return to get the job done. Sarah clapped her hands with glee and was so grateful for our help. We were rewarded for our efforts with some water and sweets!
we are a registered charity #1182360 and run Saturday play sessions for children with additional needs and their families, with qualified play workers who facilitate play while parents are able to talk and meet like minded parents/carers, we offer support and advice for parents.
