After watering the flower beds for Cultivate London on a hot day in Acton, we moved west for another community mission—this time in West Ealing.
We were litter picking the last time Kash and I were there in Dean Gardens. Cultivate London and local volunteers were weeding the green space in Dean Gardens. Kash was signing the register when I reached there, around 12pm, which is a 2/3 minute walk from my home.
We had a mattock, a few spades, and forks to dig the weeds. The soil was hard to use the spades to dig out the weeds. So we were swapping the mattock throughout the missions. John said that we only needed to remove the Alkanet
which looked similar to the Not Alkanet
plant nearby. After 40 minutes of weeding, we were dumping the weeds near a tree.
Once all the Alkanet were removed, we then moved on to remove the grass. By this time most of the volunteers have left. Kash and I dug out the grass for 10 more minutes and left when the time hit 1 p.m.
Cultivate London is a charity that provides horticultural services using sustainable, organic and biodiverse methods. They work with communities, businesses and local government to create and maintain enjoyable and sustainable urban green spaces and give local people the opportunity to learn and engage in food growing.
