On Sunday 24th May, 19 runners from West London set out to continuously run for 12 hours in an epic team relay!

These were the rules:

  • You were assigned a time slot for the day - you had to start and finish on EXACTLY on time.

  • You had to carry a baton of your choice - the more stupid the better!

  • You could run or walk, as long as you kept moving for your entire time slot that's all that mattered. The idea was to push yourself in the time you had to try and cover as much distance as possible.

  • You had to run or walk for the duration of your designated time slot anywhere you like (practicing appropriate social distancing). You did not pass your baton on at the end of your session - the next person then started their slot, with their own baton, somewhere else entirely.

So at 8am, our relay Whatsapp group came to life and for 12 hours we supported each other as we took on stages to try and cover as much distance as we could in the time we had. The spread sheet was filled in as we progressed, the live results keeping every hooked!

How far could we go? 137.01kms, that's how far!

Here's what everyone had to say:

“That's the fastest I've run all lockdown. I've eaten my baton. Goes well with a side of scrambled tofu.” - Hayley, Stage 1

“Didn’t know 1 hour could feel so long.” - Callum, Stage 2

“If there was a team relay every week I might actually get faster!” - Michelle, Stage 3 (Nearly a 5km PB!)

“I’m a big fan... of you.” - Mike, Stage 4

“It's easier to keep a grip on (a small loo roll tube) than a full one!” - Jenni, Stage 5

“I tried to get water at one point at Lammas park water fountain ..it’s been disconnected 😰Thanks for making SOOO thirsty Covid.” - Emily, Stage 6

“A very sweaty seal now 😅” - Milly, Stage 7

“Going large and bright pink for my baton.” - Sevan, Stage 8

“One home-made handle and a gold ribbon later, I finally get to use the 90cm foam roller that's been lying idle for 8 months for exercise (kind of).” - Lionel, Stage 9

“Watching a spreadsheet get filled in about as close as you can get to watching live sport these days” - Chris J, Stage 10

“Further than I am used to but what a lovely afternoon” - Chris M, Stage 11

“I for one certainly wouldn’t have gone for a fast run at 4pm without the team support we had going on today! Great to run ‘with you’ all while we can’t be together!” - Liv, Stage 12

“When we first lived together we found we coincidentally had the same tigers! So they're off on an outing too.” - Matt & Eloise, Stage 13

“Happy to report I got some super funny looks “ - Leticia, Stage 14

“The last relay I ran was in 1992 and I dropped the baton. Sooo much better!” - Shan, Stage 15

“Running with a riding crop to stop myself from slowing down!” - Alex, Stage 16

“ 🥳🥳🥳🥳 You guys rock!” - Kate, Stage 17

“That was ace, must carry a rolling pin round Ealing more often on a Sunday evening!” - Harvey, Stage 18
