Oxford Report written by Vicky Arnold
Ten Goodgymers defied the stormy forecast and spent what turned out to be a beautiful morning on Port Meadow, forensically scouring paths, riverbanks, and undergrowth for the detritus left behind by the less conscientious minority of meadow users.
The wetter weather recently has meant less mess. Nevertheless, Julian the Meadow Ranger met us with a grim photo of what broken glass can do to a cow's leg, taken just this morning, and pointed out where we could make the biggest impact by picking up the bottles and plastic waste which pose such a threat to the livestock and wildlife.
A classic Goodgym litter pick then ensued, complete with pants (unerringly detected by Julia) , thongs (spotted by Matty) , socks (Linda, on the ball on her first task), and masks, as well as bottles, cans, cardboard, and dog poo bags. Weirder highlights included glasses, sunglasses, and - with a bit of teamwork - a fire extinguisher fished out of the river.
The skies were dramatic, the Meadow looked stunning, and Matty pretty much successfully made friends with a cow. We also welcomed three new Goodgymers - Emma, Linda, and Christopher. Thank you to Julian for his bags and litter pickers and Meadow lore!
