Tower Hamlets Report written by Laura Williams
"We gathered for yet another memorable evening of volunteering at this well-known urban community garden in the heart of Bethnal Green.
What started as a routine mission to move soil and wood chips quickly turned into an unexpectedly lively and fun event—complete with record-breaking attendance, a pink-hued sunset, and the kind of teamwork that would make even the busiest ant colony jealous.
We were all hands on deck right from the off.
As soon as the shovels hit the ground, it was as though we collectively tapped into some sort of communal rhythm. A human chain formed, with everyone passing, digging, and moving soil with the efficiency and focus of, dare I say it, a swarm of ants. You could almost hear the theme music to a heist movie playing in the background. (Instead of robbing a bank, however, we were enriching the earth and helping the garden flourish).
Emma, assumed the role of our unofficial forewoman. Her managerial oversight was crucial to the operation—spurring us on from a comfortable vantage point. (We’ll pretend the regular supply of snacks and much-needed pep talks didn’t help that much).
We also welcomed a couple of new and familiar faces into the fold: Ramón, the rookie of the group, stepped into the gardening scene with admirable enthusiasm. And then there was Anton, back for his third round of soil-shoveling glory.
As the evening progressed, the sun began its slow descent, offering one of those final summer sunsets you wish you could bottle for the darker months ahead.
The sky turned a brilliant pink, casting a soft, warm light over the garden, a reward for our hard work.
Hard to say what felt better: the satisfaction of seeing the fruits of our labour come together, or the stunning sight that marked the end of the day.
And the best part? We finished everything double quick. Whether it was the accompanying breeze, our ‘swarm-of-ants’ approach, or simply the record turnout, we blitzed through what should’ve been an all-day task in less than an hour.
Of course the evening wasn’t complete until we wrapped at a pub nearby. What’s an evening’s productivity without a pint to celebrate. So a few of us found our way to local favourite, The Approach Tavern. With (garden) gloves off, dirt-free pints in hand, we toasted to an evening well spent and a garden well nurtured.
Cheers to all who came out. Here’s to the first of some fabulous Autumn evenings, both in the garden and down the pub."
Tonight's big shout-outs
To Charlie, and Emma, powered by ChatGPT, for tonight’s splendid report.

What a beautiful evening for tonight’s activity!
We started out as a small group working out on the planters in busy Ravenscroft Park, but slowly grew, until there were a good number enjoying the final stretches shortly before 7.
Making our way around the corner to meet Ed, our task owner this evening, we decided tonight might be a hayfever special, thankful we’d come armed with tissues and antihistamines.
This evening we were working around the pretty race track garden (so-called due to its winding gravel path) and the grass-filled garden at the front of Sivill House, helping to clear some of the many weeds.
A third team were dispatched to the Orchard area, to complete an extensive watering operation.
The Columbia TRA are the tenants & residents association for the Newling, Dorset, Virginia and Gascoigne Estates in Tower Hamlets. These estates sit on-and-around the Columbia Road area, and are home to some much-loved green areas.
Our team continued to grow as we plucked weeds and hydrated trees, and we made a good dent in the garden tasks.
At shortly before 8, we started to think about wrapping-up, tipping one last bucket into the weed pile and winding the hose away for the night.
Posing for that all-important final pic (thanks for your patience as always) we wheeled barrows back to the lock-up, said our cheerios and wandered off into the beautiful evening sun.
A fantastic start to the week.
Shout-outs
Thanks to our brilliant task owner, Ed for this evening’s great activity and for tonight's pun, and to Lucinda for another splendid pun, Green Green Dry Grass of Home.
Until next time.

The blue skies may have left the scene but GoodGymmers far and wide had gathered at Telford parkrun from the Shindig and elsewhere, bringing their own sunshine to the gathered masses.
With first timers joining the parkrun family, people bagging their alphabet T plus seasoned parkrunners and volunteers, a huge group cheered in the final parkrunner and her entourage of tailwalkers and marshals gathered along the way.
The results are published for anyone interested in that sort of thing and we look forward to hearing of future parkrun adventures from you all!

Tonight we helped Larry to resurface a key area of the outdoor space for the Yurt cafe and Foundation of St Katherine's. Our mission was to remove the old gravel, cover the patch with fresh underlay then add the new gravel. Simple in theory, but the task was not to be underestimated in just over an hour. A big welcome to Tyler who completed his first Goodgym task and definitely got stuck in shovelling the gravel into wheel barrows and securing the new underlay. We worked diligently to finish our patch which went from looking tired to a welcoming space with new white gravel. We even had a DJ to power us through the task thanks to the Limehouse cafe garden where we gathered for a post-task pizza and drink. Thanks everyone for all your hard work!
