Flyering High

Friday 6th April 2018

Written by Leanne (she/her)

Four GG Yorkies took to the streets of Acomb to finish off the OCAY flyer deliveries that were started on Monday night's soggy group run

On a thankfully much dryer day, we divided into two sub teams and set to work on our deliveries.

After 45 minutes of posting, we reunited, everybody with fingers in tact in spite of the best efforts of the letterboxes and dogs of Acomb. Job done!

Don't Stop Be-Leafleting!

Monday 2nd April 2018

Written by Paul Anderson

If nothing else then tonight proved that they breed them tough in Yorkshire! 10 intrepid GG Yorkies kept believing and braved the torrential rain to deliver leaflets on behalf of a free local advocacy service (OCAY) for people aged 50+. Even more impressive was that a new runner joined the group tonight! Just what made Paul decide that making his GG debut in a monsoon to be a good idea is still a mystery, but we think he'll fit in just fine!

Nick was especially proud of his 6 inch ruler that he had brought with him especially for the task. Apparently a ruler makes a good instrument to fully push the leaflet through the letterbox, and also preserve the delicateness of your hands. However, great amusement ensued when Ellie realised which particular ruler Nick had brought with him:

"Dad you haven't brought THAT ruler have you, it's the ............. one" (See pics to fill in the blank!)

Following a specially devised 'postman' themed warm-up the group left the warmth and comfort of Costa Coffee and ran 3k to the starting point for the task. From there the group split into two, the 'pink' team and 'orange' team. Leanne took charge of the Pink team and Nick the Orange.

After briefing her group Leanne watched in dismay as Christine and Ian disappeared down a different road to what she was expecting. Christine made a valiant attempt to defend herself later, but we still aren't convinced that blaming a fruit is a good enough excuse!

"How am I meant to know the way if all the streets are called Cranberry?"

Thankfully Nick's group made smoother progress (possibly thanks to THAT ruler?) and they soon completed their streets and also had a spare 5 mins to help the Pink team complete their allocation.

Both groups then joined forces and returned to base to complete a series of animal walks all designed to work on core fitness.

All in all it was a great night, but we are all looking forward to Egg reclaiming the reins next week. (Will Nicks ruler also reappear, turn up next Monday to find out!)

Be-Leaflet or not, we did OCAY

Wednesday 14th February 2018

Written by Leanne (she/her)

Despite their greatest efforts, five of our mightiest, fastest runners didn't quite manage to finish their paper round on Monday night's sub-task, so Ellie, Barbara and Leanne returned to the scene of the flyer delivery to let the people of Acomb know about OCAY's advocacy service for older people.

We discovered the delights of bristly letter boxes and barking dogs as we ran up and down around 200 drive ways to spread the word for OCAY.

25 minutes later our mission was accomplished and we ran off in different directions... before running back towards each other when we realised we hadn't yet taken a photo for the mission report! Then we ran home.

Cowpats, Cattlegrids, Cobbles and er.. Cardio

Monday 23rd October 2017

Written by York runner

Two groups of GG Yorkies headed to opposite parts of town to complete two good deeds

It was an evening of celebrations as we celebrated Leanne getting her wings for completing 100 good deeds, such an amazing achievement (so make sure you go and give her a cheer). There was something of an unintended GoodGym bake off as Huw had made good deed biscuits and Lizzie and I had made a good deed cake!

We also celebrated the return of EJ and Darren, who brought along a couple of friends too. In fact, we welcomed three new runners to GoodGym, so more cheers please to Diana, Gavin and Jordan.

Report by Nick The longer run set off along the riverside path and we immediately needed our head torches. To keep the group of 16 together we had several run backs as we dodged cow pats and cattle grids. There were so many it looked at times like Emma was doing the hurdles. Arriving safely at Rawcliffe we were soon put to work by Kristina; sharpening, cleaning and tightening shears, fitting new handles to broom heads and preparing all the tools that we so often get to use on our gardening tasks!

How long will they last before they need sharpening again?".... "No idea, we've never sharpened them before!"

Egg had prepared us a short fitness session with one group doing cardio and the other doing isometric holds - Leanne was in charge of instructions and timing and I sort of did demonstrations - before it was back on the riverside path to dodge more cow pats on the homeward leg - GG York's longest group run yet!

Meanwhile on the shorter run, we were delivering 1000 leaflets for the Older Citizens Advocacy in York. After a thorough briefing and map examination, Aron led out Team 1 on the east side and I took Team 2 to the west side.

The streets of South Bank were dark and all teams discovered secret and cobbled pathways to link up the maze of roads in the area. In under 30 minutes, we'd delivered all the leaflets. The teams met back at the rendevous point with extraordinarily good timing. From there, we played a few games of meet and retreat with a few exercises thrown in to make it a bit more difficult than it already is..

Once back at base, we finished off with a bit of classic core and a stretch out before being joined by the long run team.. this meant we could finally get Leanne to cut that cake as well as passing around the biscuits.

It's cakey and delicious!

Job done.
