Islington Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice
On Monday evening, Area Activator Simon was thrilled to go for a (slightly chilly) run with Mehmet and Emily (congratulations on your half marathon in Richmond!) up Sussex Way and over to the Hornsey Rise Kickabout Playground. About 1.8 miles from the Arsenal Hub to Sunnyside Community Gardens, and short walk to find this unique new planting space.
Down a quiet corridor by Hazellville Road, we found the gardens built upon a former basketball court in the middle of a housing estate. Right on time, we heard an Islington Council electric bicycle, and Eslam appeared around the corner, with access keys, jute coffee sacks, bags of chaff and collected leaves on board. We made our way in, and got started!
Our task for the evening involved contributing towards the big overall project- filling the whole playground with quality soil for local residents. Together, we used some sturdy donated jute bags (provided by The Roasting Shed and Allpress Coffee) to collect up fallen leaves from Sunnyside Community Gardens for future composting and mulching. We were also provided with "chaff", the lovely soft produce created by roasting coffee cherries that also works really well as a fertiliser (and smells wonderful!). Over the course of an hour, we had filled up at least 20 full bags between us, making a great heads start for the residents spring time composting.
To celebrate the end of November, we had a gathering at Rusty Thai cafe just off Hornsey Rise, well regarded for delicious noodles and hot soups on cold days! Well done everyone.

Well done everyone on another good task helping Springfield Park!
Me, George and Caitlin met outside Brunswick Bakehouse for a nice social run through parks and along the river Lea to the task. There we met up with the rest of the team, welcome new Goodgymer Paula !
We grabbed the tools from the depot and made our way to the work in progress Wildflower Strip next to the tennis courts in Spring Hill.
We surveyed the area and focused on patch which we were able to complete in the allocated time. We raked/ hoed the grass, whilst dodging tennis balls! We then spread sand over the area to help with reducing the grass burden, and dropping the fertility of the ground which will help to establish a healthy wildflower strip that will be more likely to survive long term. Wildflower strips are a great source of food for pollinators, and great for bigger mammals like hedgehogs who will hunt in them.
Before we knew it we created our own little Beach / Dry Garden in Hackney.
Great job everyone, see you at the next one!

Islington Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice
Goodgym Islington were invited to a new task this evening - always a joy to receive a referral for our help! The crew met up on Holloway Road to catch up before meeting up with Sandy, one of the key helpers at Pollard Close Allotments (great job to Alison and Caitlin for helping in Kentish Town, and to Matt for assisting in Thornhill Square last weekend).
Together we were led through a wiggly pedestrianised passage over to a nondescript metal door. On the other side was a hidden collection of 28 allotment beds formed out of a former car-park next to an electric substation- amazing! Sandy showed us over to a large couple of composting bins, ready to cultivate new soil for planting in Spring. Our task for the night was to make a start on moving all of the freshly rotted compost into builder's merchant bags, and to tip the semi-rotted compost into a new bin- keeping a rotation in motion. The plan is to encourage the rest of the local gardeners to complete the job, after making a solid start this evening.
The team did a smashing job of digging out the compost as best they could- while also finding huge spiders, brightly coloured millipedes, parsnips, russet potatoes and swathes of carpet lodged in between the soil and mulch. All of the vegetables were collected up and distributed between the group for roast dinner additions and winter stews. Within 45 minutes, we successfully filled 1 and a half tonne bags of new compost, ready for planting.
An excellent job well done on a Monday evening- great stuff!

Camden Report written by Alex Murtough (he/him)
YouTube - if you ask for the right things - is quite the haven for gardening advice.
You can learn to mow and grow - or weed and seed - and there's a particularly healthy glut of guidance on planting.
I know this because I started my Saturday by searching (YouTube): how to plant bulbs
I watched several videos.
I was particularly impressed with Geoff from Australia, who demonstrated every conceivable tool one could use to dig a hole (for a bulb), before I realised his real interest was to sell the BULB-DEMON-2000 (which does, I admit, drill a hole in perhaps 2 seconds)
I left for the special Barnfield and Woodfield Estate feeling decidedly under-confident, especially without a BULB-DEMON-2000
Yet my anxieties were calmed as I met Mike, Lucy and Sedef (on their first GoodGym good deeds - a huge welcome!!), and we started the morning by collecting spades and taking them to a freshly mown autumn lawn.
We were soon joined by Alison, Caitlin, Cherian, and Nivia, and Mike (with my anxiety fading) showed us the bulb-planting to-dos with calm and poise. And I nodded in a way that suggested I knew all about this.
Dividing gorgeous spring bulbs (delectable types of daffodil) and spades, our group (with Barnfield resident, Callum, and Steve joining too) swiftly got to digging turf pockets, making roomy space, and planting our spring flowers to come.
With pastries and coffee to finish, we said our farewells :)
I feel excited about returning in March to see what nature does with our efforts! Thank you so much, everyone, for your time and work - I had a super lovely time and hope you did too!
Here's to next time!
