Every trick in the book

Oxford Report written by Anwen Greenaway

Orinoco is a new project for us, but in fact has been going for over 20 years. They aim to inspire art, creativity and play through reuse of items that would otherwise be destined for landfill. Previously based in Peat Moors, they now have a shiny new home in Temple Cowley shopping centre and a lot of moving-in jobs to be done.

This was our 2nd Wednesday evening session at Orinoco. The book event we helped them prepare for last week was a roaring success at the weekend, with over £900 raised in donations. Now it was time to the flip the store from book shop to multi-purpose space.

Springing into action we had teams:
* Unloading the Orinoco van to bring in more stock.
* Clipping shelving together to make taller units and reconfiguring their layout.
* Reorganising the storage area at the back of the shop floor - breaking down cardboard boxes, taking loads of donations upstairs to the extensive store rooms above the shop.
* Stocking the shelves with books to make a library corner.
* Laying out the games in another section of shelving.
* Attempting construction of further shelving; a failed attempt due to missing elements of the units - no GoodGymers at fault ;-)

By the time our hour was up the shop was looking much closer to being ready for the big relaunch on 19th February.

Great work team!

Owen Smith earned their community cape by completing their first community mission.

Owen completed a community mission. Instead of watching TV or lying in bed, Owen was out there making their community a better place to be. For making that choice they have earned the community cape.

Bank it!

Oxford Report written by Anwen Greenaway

A big team effort this afternoon at Oxford Mutual Aid food bank: preparing food parcels, sorting through baked goods, unpacking and consolidating fruit and vegetables, chucking out food waste, breaking down cardboard and creating order from the heaps of crates (unearthing Christmas gifts in the process).

Good work team GoodGym - there was a lot to do and you certainly rose to the challenge!

Welcome Owen - good to meet you!

Mistletoe and Bine-weed

Oxford Report written by Rachael H (she/her)

On a, thankfully, dry day six goodgymers helped out at the Oxford City Farm. We were tasked removing brambles (standard 💪) which had grown over part of the old veg plot, and digging out roots of nettles and bindweed from the potato and bean patch so it could be covered for winter.

With the added incentive of chocolate brownies for the longest weed root dug up, Lucy, Sophie and Katie got stuck in to a treasure trove of weeds, the deeper you go the more you find! Thomas and Owen tackled the brambles - Thomas being very keen to put the sythe to good use! And Owen could not be dragged away at the end of the task, excellent dedication to bramble eradication! (or perhaps the cache of potatoes..)

After prepping the site, we tucked it in for winter with a big sheet, and then had a well earned and well received cup of tea with the sheep. The farm manager said they were considering getting some mini goats for the farm so watch this space for future tasks!

(bonus points for identifying what Katie is pointing at!)
