Lights Camera Action - the Litter is in the can and thats a wrap

Leicester Report written by Leicester runner

Well folks, an exciting night for GoodGym as the BBC Television crew were shadowing the session and litter picking task. Dave led a short warm up and welcomed new runner Bex. It was also great to have Leigh, Lee and Louise back with the gang after a time away. Lindsay led the group on a 1.5 mile jog along the river with Jimmy as the back marker. When the group arrived at Bede Park, Mel, Lee and Louise had prepared the litter pickers and bin bags for us. With the presence of the camera crew we had attracted attention from the locals who were on the park. One chap asked if he could help and was soon at work looking for litter, on his departure he shook hands with Dave and said we were doing a good job. The BBC filmed the litter picking task and followed the GG runners around the park. Nic, Frank, Jim and Dave were then interviewed about the benefits of GG, the tasks and their involvement. After light refreshments the fitness task consisted of circuits - hops, flying 20s tree sits and use of the outdoor gym. Find of the night was an NHS issue childs crutch which we shall duly return to the Leicester Royal Infirmary. Finally the jog back to DMU for the cool down, again filmed by the crew. Keep a lookout on the Leicester GG facebook page for details of the broadcast time and date! Thanks all for a great turnout tonight.

Creepy Canal Capers!

Birmingham Report written by Jonny Carter

18 people ran 5k to do a litter pick on the canal

We met in our usual spot in 1000 Trades, the lights suitably dimmed to give us a slight Halloween feel. We had four GG Newbie’s which we were delighted to welcome, they were Sally, David, Julien and Lola. Please give them a cheer. Once we found our litter picking equipment, (maybe a ghost or ghoul had moved it!!) we went down to the aptly dark and rather spooky canal to do our litter pick. Once on the canal we split up into four groups, each group clearing a different section of the canal towpath.

HIIT

We all met up with our bags at Aston Lock, were Ken did a great job of taking the group selfie. Once all that was done we headed back. We stopped under Snow Hill Station where there is a little more light to do some high intensity work. It started with press ups on the lock gate, followed by a sprint to the steps, then a sprint back to the lock gate were the grouped smashed out some reverse dips, giving those triceps a good pasting! Top work by Aaron and Dionne with those dips. This was then followed by some high knees running, squat jumps, straight leg kicks and tuck jumps. Everyone doing a great job. Ken showed great form with the squat jumps. Annie got the knees right up in the tuck jumps and Paige put in some great work with the straight leg kicks.

A staggered wall squat?!

The final part of the session was the whole group getting into a line to do a wall squat, with the person at the far left having the least time to hold the wall squat and then the person at the far right having the most amount of ‘wall squat holding to do’. When I in turn told each person to ‘go’ they then had to do one last sprint to the stairs! Most of the group understandably looked like they were running through quicksand after that, as even the first in line had to hold for 30 seconds before they sprinted. Well done to Garry and Sam (the last two) who held the wall squat for 2 mins 35 seconds and 2 mins 45 seconds respectively and yes you both definately looked like you had pooped yourselves when you did your sprints!!!

So that was that, the group then had a steady run back to base, well done to everyone, you all deserve a few Halloween treats after that!

Next week we will be out doing good again, it would be great if you could join us sign up here.

Leaf..let it out! They're Bark..ing mad

Bath Report written by Bath runner

Autumn may have fallen in Bath but that didn't stop 10 fabulous runners from putting their best football feet forward for a 5k run out for a spot of leaflet dropping for Bath City football club ahead of their annual community day on 21st October. The club is community owned so don't miss out on this fun packed day for all the family.

Welcome to Rosie and Joe joining us for their first taste of Goodgym.

Three cheers to Mary and Rosie on completing their first marathon in Bournemouth on Sunday. Well done to Pascale on another marathon in the bag ahead of The Eden project Marathon this weekend... GO GIRL!!

These speedy guys soon had 200 leaflets posted to promote Bath City football clubs community day. This is going to be a fun packed day for all the family and will raise vital funds for the community led football club, make sure you spread the word and go along on the day.

Time for task two

With the leaflets well and truly posted we had time left to shift some bark chip at the foot of some community allotments on a very slippery grass pathway,

The team certainly worked hard tonight bagging up the bark chips and shifting them along a length of muddy ground at the bottom of the community allotments. A bit of OCD with the variation in bark shade along the stretch of path but all was made very clear when Katie and Rosie spilled the beans on newbie Joe bagging up the lighter bark because it weighed less...HA!! they certainly marked his card.

Great to hear everyone enjoying themselves whilst getting fit and doing good tonight helping out two great community led projects.

TIME UP

Run back to the leisure centre for a well earned stretch out and reminder to bring your documents along to your next group run and get mission verified.

Thanks to Emma for back marking and Joe for a Barking mad pun

Well done you crazy bunch

Evan n help us!!

Bath Report written by Bath runner

An autumnal 6k run in Bath this evening to Action on hearing loss for a spot of gardening for 15 lending a hand to Evan who tends to the vast beautiful gardens at the sheltered housing for people with hearing loss.

Massive welcome to Katy joining us for her first taste of Goodgym.

Pascale led the group out tonight with Steph back marking, lets face it we are so inclusive in Bath we have our very own sign interpreter AKA Pascale...WHOOP!! We are lucky.

Evan was on fine form this evening and a former shadow of himself, he's started running and is training for his first Bath half marathon in march. He could join in the Goodgym Bath fun.

TIP TOP EVAN

We worked in two teams for 30 minutes, weeding and tending two individual flower beds. Evan was busy organising the wheel barrows to collect up for composting.

Great to hear everyone chatting away and to see Pascale signing with some of the residents at the center. keeping fit whilst doing good and socialising with a great bunch.

Can't be beaten fir the body and mind

Group photo before saying our goodbyes and heading back to the leisure centre just in time.

Thanks guys for making a Tuesday evening fabulous.

Don't forget to sign up to our birthday celebrations later this month https://www.goodgym.org/happenings/goodgym-bath-is-turning-two
