Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by StephDucat
Sunny Saturday morning and Steph headed to Belvue Park, not to run there like he did a week ago during the Queen of the Suburbs Ultra but to join locals for a green task with Trees for Cities. This was the last day of several sessions organised by them to show and plant trees with locals in the park. Steph registered and then was allocated to a small group which was lead by someone Steph already knew : Cristina who is part of Northfields allotments where Goodgym Ealing participate each year in their Halloween event setup. Our group was only a small one : 3 of us. We put our volunteering bibs on, put gloves and walked to out spot where a acer of more commonly known as Maple tree. On the way, we picked up tools including spades, wheelbarrows, hammers, small nails, scissors etc. The first task was to cut out a circle of turf/grass where the tree was going to be planted. With spades we did a circle, then Cristina said we will do pizza slides to remove the grass. So turf pizza slices it was : vegetarian pizza for you Steph!!! Once the slices were removed, we could see the soil. We measured the size of the bottom of the tree that was wrapped in a bag : took circumference and also height as needed to know who deep to dig. So in the circle, we had to dig a square to put the tree in which was also a circle. Circle in a square in a circle : all mathematically possible?! The tree roots were made free the bag, install into the square and covered by the soil that was removed beforehand. The pizza slices were then reused but upside down. To help the tree, we then had 3 wooden poles to plant around the tree in a triangle. We put on hard hats as we used a metal rammer for the wooden stakes. The stakes will give support and be removed later in the year. Mulch was then wheelbarrowed from the bottom o the hill and was then spread around the trunk but left space around the trunk to avoid the moist on the bark and prevent decay. Great team work and we all brought the tools back to the bottom of the hill near the registration tent. We were treated to snacks and hot drinks. Steph went for a juicy apple as it keeps the doctor away. The next groups were getting ready to plant more trees in the park.
We get stuck in with local communities to cultivate lasting change in their neighbourhoods โ whether itโs revitalising forgotten spaces, creating healthier environments or getting people excited about growing, foraging and eating healthy food.
