Ultimately, it was two Teams on either end of the Church grounds making a small difference. One mission was to clean up the war memorial and the other, involved two sections where we had to lift up some of the turf a few inches off the ground.
Thanks to the tools we had available. This included a post basher, a tape measure, a string for the border, some wooden posts and a small shovel. It was pretty evident that the surrounding lawn around the Church was steeped in history so we took note of that from the beginning. The two areas in question was pretty close to a previous trench that Goodgym previously got involved back in 2024, where we also spotted the sow that reaped its rewards with full flower.
We took a section of the lawn at the back of the church (or depending which way you look at it) and started digging. We found no artifacts, perhaps some dust from previous stone diminished.
Shortly afterwards, we completed our mission. The vicar invited us in for some refreshments afterwards. It's pretty amazing when a team comes together!

At Canbury Community Garden...
We met up with Marilyn for our evening's good deed before separating into two teams. Armed with buckets and a good sense of humour, Marie-Noelle, and Jana formed the ultimate human river-link, ferrying water from the river to quench the garden’s thirst. Meanwhile, Jacqui and Petra rolled up their sleeves (and their rollers) to fill buckets and cans with liquid gold. Jana, Petra, and Jacqui then went full 'splash squad,' expertly soaking the veggies under Marilyn’s green-thumbed guidance. With Purdey the pooch tailing us like a furry forewoman, we had one hour to turn dry soil into a hydrated haven and we absolutely nailed it. Mission: plant-possible complete!
Tom and Luke helped a former community garden volunteer by cutting up and removing two small trees from her houseboat-garden. They also resisting the tempting offer of a beer each while they worked - showing great restraint on the job!
And on the GoodGym Kingston plot...
The sun had been shining on the GG flowerbed so there were plenty of weeds and laurel to tackle. Ken and Dave set to work on the laurel, brambles and weeds at the back of the flowerbed making sure it looked all neat and tidy.
Marcus dug up the dead plant and the small weeds then headed off to the river to fill lots of buckets with water as the plants were in desperate need of a drink. Meanwhile Claire planted a couple of new plants and tackled the weeds.
The bed was looking very tidy and colourful by the time we left.

Commemorating the 80th anniversary of VE Day on Thursday, 8 May 2025.
To commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day when Nazi Germany surrendered to the Allies, Chris Ken and Anita spent time decorating one of GoodGym Richmond‘s sponsored plots in Buccleuch Gardens in order to remember and honour those who served in World War II and also the millions who lost their lives in the conflict.
Most of the 90+ reusable poppies had been premade from recycled clothing but the session started with a sewing bee where we made up further poppies from pre-cut petals and centres (cut out from a pre-loved faux suede coat bought from a car boot sale for £1) and then created the distinctive black centres of Flanders poppies using a permanent marker.
Half of puppies were combined with lengths of freshly cut ivy (weeded out of the adjacent border) to decorate seven withie wreaths that we then attached to the black railings of the arcade. The other poppies were wired onto the tips of the branches of the alder tree in the arcade lawn.
Taking the step ladder home at the end of the session there was an opportunity to walk across the nearby poppy-decorated pedestrian crossing on Petersham Road which marks the entrance to the Royal British Legion’s poppy factory.

Kingston upon Thames Report written by Dave White
Ken and Dave met up this evening to dig a few test holes in a 'dodgy' alleyway next to a school. The plan is to plant a few trees and plants along the alleyway to encourage people to use it more and to lessen the dodgy behaviour that has occurred in the past.
Test holes dug with varying levels of success but the conclusion that, with a bit of hard work, some planting can be carried out when needed 🙌

Fun task this morning as a bunch of goodgymer's and other volunteer groups combined to do a mass litter pick across Petersham common. Led by our unfortunately injured, but local resident outdoors man Ken - we set about combing the area clean of garbage. There was a lot but we smashed through it, and felt good for having done our bit! Coffee and a stroll past the 3 pigeons plot (another goodgym managed site) to admire the lovely flowers and we were done!
On to the next one... Monday ... "we go again! We do not let this slip!" :-)
