You never know what is lurking in the undergrowth

Oxford Report written by Bethan Greenaway

And for us yesterday evening that included:

  • bike tyres
  • buckets
  • an old garden fork
  • window frames
  • storage drawers
  • household rubbish
  • wine bottles and of course PANTS!

Returning to Boundary Brook is always a joy. This time we were tasked with litter picking the edges of the nature reserve, both inside and out. It is frankly bonkers what we find on litter picks.....

After an hour and a bit we had amassed a mountain of litter ready for the council to collect, and fortified by cherries (thanks Trevor) we set off into the sunny evening for our run.

Good work team!!

A sunny Sunday for GoodGym at Race for Life

Oxford Report written by Ellie Evans (She/her)

On Sunday morning, a group of us volunteered with GoodGym and Cancer Research UK at Oxford’s Race for Life.

We took on a range of roles—from pacing and marshalling to handing out well-earned snacks and medals at the finish line. A special shout-out to Emma for completing her first GoodGym task and for bringing extra energy with her fantastic handmade signs to cheer everyone on!

The atmosphere was really positive, with strong support from spectators and a great turnout for the 5km and 10km races.

A huge congratulations to everyone who took part and raised an incredible amount of money for Cancer Research UK!

Lavender’s blue (dilly dilly), rosemary’s green

Oxford Report written by Bethan Greenaway

This evening we had a glorious time at Marston Forest Garden. After an enthusiastic greeting from Anthony, Isobel and Oboe the dog we wandered through the site to the Medicinal Herb Circle.

The whole site has burst into bloom in the last few weeks, fruit has started to ripen, flowers popping up and the trees are thriving.

This evening we were tasked with weeding the herb circle in readiness for one of Isobel's glorious brick labyrinths. Armed with tools and fortified by watermelon and DELICIOUS flapjacks we set to work. After an hour and a bit the area looked much better and Isobel sent us into the allotment to forage for fruit and herbs.

Already looking forward to our July session!

Duck bullies and doggie hugs

Oxford Report written by Bethan Greenaway

What a glorious morning!

Thank you to everyone who cane to the Blenheim jaunt.

We started in the town square and encountered some very mean boy ducks and did some excellent people watching. We them set off around Blenheim Palace park stopping to admire sheep and lambs, avoid some very protective goose parents and their fluffy babies and also to get our breath back at the top of the big hill!

The routes were planned to perfection (yes I'm feeling smug about that!) and we regrouped in the square before having our all important post-run refreshments.

It seems that we even managed to tire out coach Rosie!!

I'll be planning some more social run/walk sessions over the summer. Keep your eyes peeled!

Don’t scythe for me Aston’s Eyot

Oxford Report written by Bethan Greenaway

We LOVE a scything session!!

The weather was perfect last night for a meander through the Eyot and a spot of cleaning and clearing. After meeting Charlie and having a reminder of the safest way to carry and use the scythes, we strolled to the area that needed attention. Aston's Eyot has a lot of clearings which often get over grown by nettles. This prevents any other flora and fauna from getting established. After splitting into team-scythe and team-rake we got to work. Accompanied by the sounds of the "bumping" boat races and the sassy announcer (very stereotypical Oxford) we made short work of a large parch of nettles and lopped some low hanging branches for safety and to let more light in. It was a delightful task, full of chat about running, books, bakeries and hearing about adventures to New Zealand and Canada from Becky and Ellie!

Thank you for the report title Joe!

Pick axes for plug plants

Oxford Report written by Bethan Greenaway

Last night we returned to the magical spot that is Boundary Brook Nature Reserve. we've done lots of tasks here over the years - usually moving heavy things, laying paths or digging out bramble roots! This evening's jobs were a little more gentle - or so we thought!

Helen needed us to plant out some little plug plants on the outskirts of the meadows so that they can naturally pollinate and spread over time. Despite the rain earlier in the day, the dry weather meant that the ground was rock hard!

We soon had a fab tag team approach. The water carriers would soak the ground, the planters could then dig and plant the plugs, then more water was added. We made short work of 50 plug plants allowing time to lop over-hanging branches around the paths and start weeding a soft-fruit area.

Bethan and Joe then did a gorgeous after task run.

A lovely evening - good work team!!
