Community Streets

We are looking for local residents to help to bring the Community Streets project to life in the Harolds and Thornvilles neighbourhood.

Join the group, bring your ideas to the project, and help to deliver tangible improvements to your road. Be a part of turning your street into a cleaner, greener, social space, by working with local experts in community gardening. Learn to install bin stores, street planters and raised beds, bike and buggy stores, addressing areas of concern for the neighbourhood

Stuck in a Rut

Wednesday 12th March

Written by Laura

Last night, 5 GoodGymers ran 2.5K to meet Beth at Community Streets to line and paint planters for their project to create the first Community Street in Leeds. We missed Helen and her expert knowledge of the streets of Headingley as we got slightly lost coming off the ridge, but we found it in the end thanks to Jason and Google maps.

It was nice to get there & it still be light...we're nearly into lighter GoodGym evenings!

At one point, Beth gave instructions about the ruts & I mistakenly thought she said rat, creating a moment of panic!

Good work everyone.

Every Day I'm Muscle'n

Wednesday 15th January

Written by Laura

It was great to get the gang back together tonight! 11 GoodGymers ran 2.5K to the Community Street at Quarry Place to continue with a variety of tasks.

We got a good workout in, moving several heavy planters down the street and into the van. We also continued to build the planter in the bin store, we lined and moved some other planters and then the remaining few of us finished off with some litter picking, filling 3 bags full of rubbish! Jason got to play with a drill again which we all know he enjoys and Fay was a trooper picking litter in a whole street by herself.

I had to laugh at Kat who thought the January challenge was for a whole year, so her target might be slightly unachievable in one month... you have 15 days left Kat, so you might need to run all day, every day to make that target!

What a productive evening! We then ran another 2.5K back to Heart. Thanks to Helen for leading another great run.

How Many GoodGymers Can You Fit into a Front Room?

Wednesday 18th December 2024

Written by Laura

A tin of sardines comes to mind....

Tonight we helped out Community Streets with two different groups. We had one group outside doing joinery by building a large planter, we didn't get to finish it but will come back to finish the job. The indoor group then lined several planters in Beth's living room & piled them up in the yard.

We finished up by drinking hot toddy and eating mince pies. Thanks to Beth for hosting and for feeding us at the end!

Welcome to newcomers Stella and Zoe this evening, we hope to see you again in the new year!

Well done to Faye for reaching 10 good deeds tonight.

Happy Christmas all, have a great couple of weeks & we'll see you in 2025 for the January challenge. Thanks for all of your hard work in 2024!

The One Where Jason Tossed His Bits!

Wednesday 4th December 2024

Written by Laura

What great team work tonight! The group ran down to Quarry Place to meet Beth who's working on her street becoming the first Community Street project in Leeds. There's all sorts planned to get the whole street involved in horticulture and community activities.

We had 3 jobs:

Faye put flyers through the letterboxes on the street.

The outside team were building a work bench. This team had a production line going on to mark the wood, drill the holes, put screws in, hold it steady and screw it in! Good team work all & apparently Jason tossed his bits everywhere...I think that the least we know about that the better!

The inside team lined 3 planters which was actually harder than it sounds! We took 40 minutes figuring out the first one and then 12 minutes on the second & third! We got there in the end.

Thanks to Beth for allowing us in her home & welcome back to Lydia for her second session.

Sorry Jason, you need to shrink for the next team photo!

Great work all!
