Get Cycling CIC is a not-for-profit community interest company. Our social enterprise is based in York and we specialise in the sale, hire, service, and repair of inclusive cycles to people across the UK. We offer all kinds of bikes, trikes, and quadricycles, plus adaptions and accessories for anyone wanting to get into cycling: for people with disabilities or support needs, for families and friends, individuals, groups, students, and workplaces. We constantly look for ways of making cycles affordable, by keeping costs low, offering refurbished models as well as new, recycling materials, providing information on funding sources, and seeking income opportunities for free loans and low-cost hire programmes. A CIC exists for the benefit of the community and our mission at Get Cycling CIC is to ensure that anyone who wants to cycle, has the opportunity to do so.

Grey-t expectations

Monday 20th February 2023

Written by Nicky Woodall (she/her)

๐Ÿ™Œ 25 gregarious GoodGymmers met for our group run this evening, amid discussion that the weather might finally be getting warmer ๐ŸŒž

๐Ÿ‘‹ We were thrilled to welcome Penny for her first group run and also to welcome Christine back ๐Ÿ˜

๐Ÿฅž After discussing our preferred pancake toppings (much classic lemon and sugar, some citrussy variation with orange and also much love for chocolate and banana or bacon and maple syrup), Mitch led the run to Get Cycling ๐Ÿ‹๐ŸŒ๐Ÿฅ“

๐ŸŽจ We were heading back to complete the painting that weโ€™ve started previously, finishing off in the shop, doing a second coat in the kitchen and a first coat in the loo! With three (rather than 50) shades of grey, the first hurdle was working out which went where โ˜‘๏ธ

๐Ÿ“‹ Martin B arrived first so was given all the info and tasked with taking a lead role. We split into groups and set to work. All went smoothly, the greatest controversy being around the door colour (the middle of the three greys was chosen). Some people finished swiftly and either joined one of the other teams (if they had a suitable brush) or had a chat/helped choreograph the group photo ๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธ

๐Ÿ“ธ Leanne helpfully decided that the photo should be taken from the top of the steps rather than the bottom (ie up peopleโ€™s noses!) so once all the brushes were washed, we gathered for that.

๐Ÿ’ช We decided to do fitness in the car park outside so that as many people as possible could join us. We combined Cones of Joy with On the Minute and also included the dance cone, as requested by Lyndsey ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿ•บ

๐Ÿ‘ Much fun was had and it was soon time to head back to base for stretching and home/pub ๐Ÿก๐Ÿป

๐Ÿ‘ Thank you everyone, and hopefully see you next week. Donโ€™t forget to check what weโ€™ve got coming up ๐Ÿ‘Œ

50 strides of grey

Monday 5th December 2022

Written by Nicky Woodall (she/her)

๐Ÿฅถ 21 gorgeous GoodGymmers met on a chilly Monday evening for our weekly group run. We congratulated everyoneโ€™s impressive efforts at the 12ks of Christmas on Saturday and were thrilled to welcome Issy who was visiting from GoodGym Exeter (another ex-London GoodGymmer!) We were also delighted to welcome Neil for his first official GoodGym task (though most of us have met him before, once or twice, maybe) ๐Ÿ‘‹

๐Ÿค” We named, numbered and warmed up whilst guessing what Max might have stolen from Vicky's house after the 12ks on Saturday. With guesses ranging from umbrellas to maps, it turned out to be a lowly clothes peg that fulfilled an important role of makeshift bike clip. Turns out Vicky doesnโ€™t count her pegs daily (who knew!) so hadnโ€™t missed it ๐Ÿ‘•

๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ After that jollity, Mitch led the run along the river to Get Cycling where we were greeted by Joanne who was very excited to have us back. She set us to work with high hopes that we could finish painting the shop, in various shades of grey. There was some impressive coverage, even with the smallest brushes. Sadly however, the shortage of light grey paint meant that we couldnโ€™t quite finish it so we may be back to complete the job ๐ŸŽจ

๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธ Some members of Team Light Grey gradually moved over to Team Kitchen, where they faced the even bigger challenge of painting white on white. Meanwhile, Team Dark Grey were cracking on and sharing platforms to paint the higher areas. Leanne and Abigail got particularly cosy whilst over on the larger wooden platform, they were experimenting with how many GoodGymmersโ€™ weight could it hold?! Quite a few, it turned out ๐Ÿค—

โš–๏ธ This morphed into how many GoodGymmers could drape themselves off the step platform for our group photo. Max's slightly precarious position caused some concern but fortunately no one was hurt in the staging of the photo ๐Ÿ“ธ

๐Ÿงผ A few hands were tingling after some thorough brush-washing, which was also completed with gusto. And we did have to (almost) physically drag some GoodGymmers away from their masterpieces to have any chance of doing any fitness on the way back ๐Ÿ’ช

๐ŸŒ‰ We said farewell to Joanne and stopped at Millennium Bridge for some strides as our fitness session. There were some great efforts and everyone looked very picturesque lit by the lovely bridge lights ๐Ÿ‘Œ

๐Ÿ˜ And with that, it was time to head back to CVS and/or the pub. Thanks for all your help everyone, and hopefully see you next week ๐Ÿ™Œ

๐Ÿšฒ We're-cycling in the rain ๐ŸŒง๏ธ

Monday 21st November 2022

Written by Nicky Woodall (she/her)

๐Ÿ’ช Thirteen dedicated deeders-of-good got (not so) delicately drenched in the aid of tonightโ€™s group run. We gathered inside CVS tonight, to avoid the rain for as long as possible โ˜”

๐Ÿฐ We discussed our favourite baking (and cooking "bakes") and discovered that weโ€™ve got some talented folk whose delicacies had us drooling in delight. From banoffee pie to crumble with everything in between, GoodGym York have got your sweet tooth covered ๐Ÿง

๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿƒ We warmed up on the go as the rain continued and were soon in the warmth and dry of Get Cycling CIC where Joanne greeted us with an extra warm smile (and places to hang our soggy layers). We also witnessed the largest fruit cake weโ€™d ever seen, from their suppliers in Holland. Sadly, to be admired with our eyes only ๐Ÿ‘€

๐ŸŽจ Joanne gave us our instructions along with a tour of the progress thatโ€™s been made since our last visit. We split into Team Kitchen and Team Big Room ๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธ

๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ Although the kitchen was slightly bigger than anticipated, it still required some human Twister to contort around each other to paint. Being a petite room, our team were quick to make progress, and in fact, finish the job. All the while, discussing moral matters and true โ€œcrimeโ€ โš–๏ธ

๐Ÿš€ Back in the Big Room, the group had split further into team dark grey (working at height) and team light grey (working slightly lower down). There were antics with rollers and paintbrushes galore and much hilarity ensued, alongside great progress being made ๐Ÿ™Œ

๐ŸŒง๏ธ Soon, it was time to venture back into the (slightly lighter?!) rain for our run back to base. Our fitness this evening featured a sprint over the Millennium Bridge Strava segment, which was accomplished impressively. We stretched back at base and parted ways to warm up and dry out ๐Ÿ”ฅ

๐Ÿ‘ Thank you everyone, what a team to embrace the rain and come out tonight ๐Ÿ‘Œ

๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธ Rollin' on the river ๐ŸŒŠ

Monday 26th September 2022

Written by Nicky Woodall (she/her)

๐Ÿ’ช 22 great and good GoodGymmers met for our weekly group run. We named, numbered and warmed up while thinking of something we could do to be a little more green and set off to Get Cycling with the excellent Amy leading the way with a lovely river route ๐ŸŒŠ

๐Ÿšฒ On our arrival, Joanne greeted us with an introduction to how they (literally) help people get cycling, with a range of accessible (and very fancy) bikes ๐Ÿคฉ

๐ŸŽจ We then had to avoid said accessible and fancy bikes whilst painting their room. We had two rollers, a range of paintbrush sizes and lots of enthusiasm, which got us a long way. Some interesting painting poses also helped us tackle some of the trickier spots. We ended up with more paint on ourselves (especially Egg) than the fancy bikes, which was definitely a good thing, and Joanne was very happy with our work ๐Ÿ˜

๐Ÿฅถ Having enjoyed the (relative) light and warmth of the shop, we ventured back out into the cold and dark evening for our run back to base, again led by the brilliant Amy, who even gave us a different route, which was lovely ๐ŸŒƒ

โ˜” Some very light precipitation (not rain, honest) just started to fall from the sky as we were doing our fitness but that didn't deter our determined efforts and we cracked on with aplomb. We did head inside for some sheltered stretching though ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿ‘Œ Thank you everyone, great work and hopefully see you again soon. Oh, and we (including myself) should probably start bringing our headtorches and hi viz to #runbrightatnight as the evenings get darker ๐Ÿ’ก
