HCG TLC

Sunday 8th February

Written by David Barrett

Stef, Abigail, Laura and David tidied up the beds at Holgate Community Garden around the raspberry canes. Abigail litter picked around the garden and the condition of the sleepers on the raised beds were also assessed and some measured up for replacement - a future task.

Holgate Expectations

Monday 19th January

Written by Ed Woollard (He/Him)

The problem with the January challenge is that we do so many good deeds that our taskowners run out of things for us to do, as was the case late last night with the council's eco team and the scheduled task at Clarence Gardens. We'd already done all the work earlier in the month. Fortunately, with a flurry of WhatsApp messages and our wonderful run leader Laura we were able to come up with a couple of tasks to fill the void and keep everyone just about busy enough.

Tonight we gave a big GG Yorkie welcome (and one dissenting boo) to Jenni who was joining is from GoodGym Reading. Great to have you here, despite Pete's rivalry! We also welcomed back Carys and Rohail who had enjoyed themselves so much last week tjat they decided to return. There were a fair few tired legs tonight after some fantastic running at the Brass Monkey half, so a lot of people were grateful for the steadier run out to the allotment task with Vicky, whilst Ed led the larger group to the community gardens with Pete and Lucy bringing up the rear.

Dan very quickly realised we would be working on the gardens at the end of his road and was almost tempted to get his "goodgym-curious" partner out to join us. Another night perhaps. At the task Laura had prepared a list of jobs that needed doing and the GG York crew got to work weeding, pruning, digging and sweeping. As we worked away we managed to spend a bit of time getting to know our newer members a bit better. Turns out Rohail is yet to try a jacket potato (cheese and beans seemed to be the best choice for an entry-level jacket) and Carys just casually dropped that she done some pretty epic running events in the past, including the Berlin Marathon!

Meanwhile, over with Vicky...

A splinter group of ladies headed to Holgate Allotments and were tasked with covering all the community allotment paths with woodchip. We quickly got stuck in and soon had a conveyor of wheelbarrows going back and forth. Alongside this was team weed, who cleared some of the paths before the bark arrived.

We had almost finished when the other group arrived, but being the perfectionists that we are, we had one final push to make sure we got the job done! We were very proud of our work and the paths look ace, if we do say so ourselves!

Once both tasks were completed we regrouped for an epic game of musical cones, with a little bit of cheating and some heated debate over the rules, before we headed back to the pub where some joined in with the cool down but most got themselves a reasonably well earned pint

Lovely stuff

The Goodgym Ivy League

Sunday 4th January

Written by Laura Barrett

This was the last of the tasks in the busy first four days of January. It was great to meet Dan and Jaime who had recently moved to York and had previously been involved in Goodgym in London. Dan and David started by replacing the nets on the basketball hoops before joining everyone else to cut back the ivy on the top if the wall. We also cleared and tidied some of the beds around it. By the end we had cleared a lot of the ivy back from the top of the wall to prevent it damaging the wall.

Investigating New Pawsibilities

Sunday 7th December 2025

Written by Laura Barrett

Despite the very soggy weather we got stuck into the tasks at the community garden. Ben had a tough job sweeping the wet leaves off the paths, Ellie dug up brambles and cleared the beds and Laura cut back the roses and cleared the beds. Callie, Ellie and Ben's dog, started to dig a hole which gave us an idea. Soon we had her joining in the task by digging the weeds and roots out of the bark chip in the play area. She finished by showing us her dog agility skills through the train.

To Stay or to Leaf

Sunday 2nd November 2025

Written by Laura Barrett

The main task was to clear the leaves from the basketball court and paths to stop them getting slippery. We started by lifting up a couple of the leaf bins to see if there was any leaf mulch that could be dug onto the beds. There was a small amount of older matter but it was mostly very dry. Becca dug a wheelbarrow full of the best bits into the beds. Amy and Laura started by emptying and resetting two of the leaf bins. Sam and Barbara swept the basketball court and David swept and cleared around the drains and attempted to unblock them of soil. Whilst all this was going on Jane pruned the two large apple trees, the blackcurrant bush and the Jasmine. Once the basketball court was mostly clear we managed to clear most of the leaves from the paths and start clearing some of the beds before the end of the hour.

Having a Light Bulb Moment

Sunday 5th October 2025

Written by Laura Barrett

We were joined by a few local residents to help keep Holgate CommunityGarden looking good. We cleared a lot of weeds from the long bed and planted some tulip bulbs. We also planted crocus and daffodil bulbs around the trees that we had cleared around last month. Jane used the ladder to the all of the remaining apples down and we left them any that weren't claimed in one of the beds for people to take.
