Monday 16th September

Written by Simon Fitzmaurice

On Monday evening, Area Activator Simon caught up with Luke, Mehmet and Louise at the Arsenal Community Hub during the golden hour- the sun was setting as we engaged in a series of dynamic warm ups in front of the Emirates Stadium. Together, we ran up Sobell Road (past the famous ice rink), along Fonthill Road (by the WB Yeates pub- named after the Irish poet) and onwards to the Light of the World Church, the home of the Lighthouse Community Project.

On route, we ran with Dan and met Eslam at the site- who was preparing the space for this evening's session. The plan is to build the green space behind the church into a community growing area for neighbouring residents, so our Goodgym crew were thrilled to get involved! Luke and Eslam began with clipping away lots of overgrown greenery surrounding the gardens using shears and standing secateurs- a time consuming job, completed with many hands! Meanwhile, Louise, Mehmet and Dan assisted with shoveling some misplaced wood and bark chippings from two large planters, and spreading the material across the back yard (helping to protect the soil and to encourage visitors to use the grass areas during the winter months).

50 minutes was the perfect duration for this task, as our trio of diggers unloaded the last of the chippings at exactly 8pm- it was meant to be! We set off back down Evershot Street together before splitting off into two groups- Area Activator Simon ran back to The Emirates Stadium, but met with Dan and Louise for food and refreshments at The Swimmer N4 to celebrate our monthly post group run socials! Well done everyone!

Grape expectations

Saturday 7th September

Written by Islington runner

At first sight Mrs L's garden was a bit of a jungle with vines, roses and various other plants intertwined - cutting down space, cutting out light & crowding out some lovely shrubs.

Under her helpful supervision (and with interest from both neighbours) Anne and David cut and lopped their way through the worst of the vegetation, leaving a lighter and more open garden. And what we didn't expect to find were small bunches of grapes nestling amongst the foliage, giving a Mediterranean touch to help Mrs L feel at home.

Full House after The Big Half (Caxton House Community Gardens)

Monday 2nd September

Written by Simon Fitzmaurice

Area Activator Simon was thrilled to catch up with 6 Goodgym legends at the Arsenal Community Hub (Emirates Stadium) last night, including returning Islington runner Ellie, Big Half finisher Louise and first time attendee Louise- welcome!

Together, we engaged in a dynamic warm up on the Emirates slopes (particularly useful for those with tired legs), before running up Sussex Way to Archway (approx 1.6 miles). Upon our arrival at Caxton House, we met with local volunteer coordinator Rose for a briefing and some much appreciated cups of water (very humid still!). Our first objective for the night was to admire the outcome of our Goodgym sessions in May, June and July 2024- a lovely planting spot and quiet garden space has been constructed out from the wild weeds, discarded plastic pipes and old dry soil at the back of the centre. Youngsters from the children's group helped with planting new bulbs and seeds last week, so we hope to see them flourish!

Our task for the evening was to help with clearing up the main entrance garden space- lovely and green, but overgrown over summer. Between us, we separated into 2 groups- group 1 assisted with using scrapers and trowels to pick out the weeds protruding from the paving slabs around the concourse. Group 2 used loppers and secateurs to trim back and remove the vines and tree branches that smothered the benches and searing areas. We kept sweeping up all green waste as we went, and easily filled 5 bags of weeds and moss by the end of our session.

A total transformation within 50 minutes of help- great job everyone!

Another Good Turn and a Berry Nice Reward

Saturday 31st August

Written by anne malcolm

Two Goodgymmers were back on hand today, helping the community gardeners at Highbury Quadrant.

After giving a young apricot tree a good drink, the goodgymmers were introduced to the compost heaps where fresh cuttings from the garden were dug and turned into the the existing heap to help speed up the composting process. A local robin joined in a supervisory role.

Then, following a quick introduction to the tiger worms in the wormery, and the 'hot box' full of not-tiger-worms, the next task was to water the plants and raised beds.

There was still time left to harvest the ripe tomatoes and pinch back the basil plants in the greenhouse to encourage new growth.

As we worked, we were offered raspberries and black currants fresh from the garden, and we left with a wonderfully fragrant stash of rosemary, basil and tomatoes to enjoy at home.
