Wednesday 21st January

January is a Frozen month, so what better way to warm up than a nice hot cup of tea and a biscuit? That's your reward for spending about an hour, potentially saving someone's life by giving blood. At Tooting Blood Donor Centre, it's quick, easy and painless to do so. And GoodGym T-shirt wearing when you do so is optional.
Here's how another of the team got on: I have been meaning to get back into donating blood for donkey's years and have (repeatedly) taken all the steps to do so short of actually making an appointment... Making this a GG January challenge task FINALLY got me over the line. It was easy, didn't take that long, everyone was super friendly, and it's all-you-can-eat popcorn biscuits and squash 😉

The idea of this individual task was to donate old pairs of running trainers, so that the charity JogOn can redistribute them and give them a new lease of life while saving them from landfill. The hardest part was actually finding a donation point. After that it was a shoe in!

Another great evening of service, and a huge well done to everyone involved. The team welcomed 22 guests in total and served a delicious, well-balanced meal that was clearly enjoyed.
The menu began with bean and Quorn tacos, served in handmade tortillas. This was followed by Quorn chicken with mash and slaw as the main course. Dessert featured poached pears with custard and chocolate sauce, and guests were also treated to a bonus strawberry and banana milkshake, which was very well received.

Some of the team joined the RSPB big garden bird watch to cound the local bird population throughout Merton and further afield. The results were a mixed bag with some owl-fully busy with constant visitors and others had a shy turnout.
It was great to get outside and Bernard joined in with a first mission, achieving a daily walking goal at the same time - well done: "Walking around the park was a pleasant experience, especially since it was my first time there. Unfortunately, I didn't see any birds, but it still provided a good opportunity to meet my daily walking goals."

The team collected up items to donate to various charities, including British Heart Foundation in Wimbledon, Royal Trinity Hospice and Little Lives UK in Raynes Park. There may have been others, so the report/register may be updated before the weekend is out!

After plenty of missions spent cleaning and tidying, it was a lovely treat to be on the front line at Merton's Community Fridge distribution session, serving up meals and smiles while helping to tackle food waste. A tasty change of scenery supporting such an important community space.
After an hour it was time to switch out, and head to another job but fortunately a trusty GoodGymer was on hand to step in. Relay team effort!
